"The Local Entertainer" - Lyrics

lg-bullet-gold.gif (1240 bytes) The Local Entertainer

This was written about a Friend of mine who was
killed returning from a show date, the song will tell
it all. In reality I think this is the story of a lot of pickers
like me.

He didn't get a write up in Newsweek
Just a standard obit in the paper on his hometown
A few close friends and some folks he knew
From the bars he used to play
Were at the funeral of the Local Entertainer

Cho: He took his kind of music
Where the stars would never go
Anyplace someone would listen
He put on his simple show
A drink and some kind words were all
He ever really lived for
The same thing the Local Entertainer died for

He dreamed of a record done in Nashville
Just a one time reward for years of dedicated work
He sacrificed his home and wife
For a measure of acclaim
Like thousands of Local Entertainers

If his kind were rewarded in Heaven
Every song that he sang would be written in purest gold
Oh how many lonely hearts he helped
As he poured out his soul
To those who'd listen to The Local Entertainer

This is a song I was recording at Columbia Studios
in Nashville when Buddy Killen invited me to become
a Staff writer for what was then Tree International. And
was released on Dial Records.

We built our little world with loving care
And the dreams we dreamed
Were far beyond compare
We called it paradise, our little hide away
But there's a cloud over paradise to day

Cho: There's a Cloud Over Paradise today
The sun can't shine
Through these cloudy skies of gray
Cause another wants to steal you away
And there's a Cloud Over Paradise today

White birds circled in the blue skies above
The flowers knew the little secrets of our love
It was a paradise but good things end they say
Cause there's a Cloud Over Paradise today
