Alex Cullum of Boots 'n' Saddles Gravely illI know that many of you artists and fans alike have become great
friends with Alex over the years, as have I.
I'm very sad to have to be the bearer of bad news, but Alex
is very ill. He was hospitalized for awhile with lung problems and called me last week. He
was tired, weak and using an oxygen tank to breathe and his spirits were lower than ever.
Then the other day, I got an email from a friend of his in Norway telling me that he'd
gone into a coma. He has since come out of the coma and while not perky, is aware and in
great pain. His friend, "G-K" is currently staying with him to tend to his needs
at his home. There's not much more to tell at this point in time... I just ask for y'all
to please pray for Alex's recovery.
Thanks,
Marli

Featured CD: Anchored
in Love: A Tribute To June Carter Cash
Various (Artist)
|
Editorial Reviews / Amazon.com
Because family values and devotion were so fundamental to June Carter Cash, it was
inevitable that this tribute album--produced by her son, John Carter Cash--would encompass
the legacy of the Carter Family and her marriage to (and musical partnership with) Johnny
Cash. The pairings that revive the June-and-Johnny duets are a mixed bag, as Willie Nelson
never really meshes with Sheryl Crow on "If I Were a Carpenter," but daughter
Carlene Carter and Ronnie (of Brooks and) Dunn absolutely nail "Jackson" with
their rambunctious interplay. Among the other highlights, stepdaughter Rosanne Cash gives
a luminous spirituality to "Wings of an Angel," while Emmylou Harris will bring
a lump to every throat with the closing "Song to John," a testament to eternal
love and the afterlife. As June's signature instrument, the autoharp figures prominently
in many of the arrangements, including Elvis Costello's rendition of "Ring of
Fire." As for June's legendary lineage, Ralph Stanley's "Will the Circle Be
Unbroken," Loretta Lynn's "Wildwood Flower," and Brad Paisley's "Keep
on the Sunny Side" all attest to the Carter Family's seminal influence not only on
daughter June, but on country music as a whole. --Don McLeese |
Product Description
This all-star tribute album was conceived and produced by John Carter Cash, the only child
of Johnny and June, and features songs written by or associated with the beloved singer,
and performed by an eclectic collection of family and friends such as Elvis Costello,
Billy Bob Thornton, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and more.
This release will coincide with the publication of John's book, "Anchored In Love: An
Intimate Portrait Of June Carter Cash". The only biography of June available, it
chronicles her life from childhood to the early days of touring with the Carter Family
band, her marriages before Johnny Cash, her early fame, her romance with Johnny, and the
ups and downs that followed. It paints a dramatic, never-before-told portrait of struggle
and success, and how the power of true love eventually overcomes all obstacles. |

Weird Scenes Inside the Birdhouse, Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan, 0mni/Fuse
* * ** *
Few words can prepare a listener for the music of married duo Jack Blanchard and Misty
Morgan. Lysergic Hayseed
Melancholy and Cowpoke Philosophy boasts a sticker on the front of the CD, but thats just part of it. After scoring a big hit in 1970 with
Tennessee Bird Walk, Jack and Misty struggled to repeat their success. The songs on this
compilation date from 1973 to 1976, when the Florida duo knew the charts were behind them
but music wasnt. While
songs such as Cows and The Cockroach Stomp continue their novelty vein, experience has
undoubtedly taught them how quickly a joke grows tired, so along with the black humour and
wry wordplay comes some fantastically catchy electric country music. With lush string
accompaniment, smooth keyboards and gospel harmonies, Jack and Misty reveal themselves to
be genre-benders, effortlessly marrying doo-wop with square dance or slide guitar with
disco. Eccentric and accomplished, entertaining and subversive, this is a delicious 70s time capsule, confirming that no one
has sounded quite like Jack and Misty.

Randy McAllister News
High Energy CD Release Party - Sons of Hermann Hall
Saturday, July 14th
It's the CD release party for "Dope Slap Soup", Randy McAllister's latest CD
release. Randy McAllister and Mike Morgan take the stage for a high energy celebration at
the legendary Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm Street in Dallas. Scheduled for Saturday,
July 14th at 9:00 pm the party starts. Don't miss this celebration as Randy McAllister,
Mike Morgan and the band bring it home for the release of Randy's 8th album containing
some of his most exciting work to date.
You'll see why, Randy McAllister along with Eric Clapton was one of only two artists to be
nominated in three international categories for Australia's 2007 Blue Star Awards this
year. What the press are saying: "the best America has too offer. The man is a Master
of Americana" - RootsTime One of the Worlds Top... Blues Artists - Big City Blues Magazine Absolutely stunning... - Baltimore Bluesrag Listen closely, you just heard the thunder clap of a music
legend!" - World Entertainment Network -
Years in the making "Dope Slap Soup" is packed full of new material and a great
excuse for a "blast the doors down" concert and release party. Most of the songs
on the new album are written and arranged by Randy with tracks 2 and 7 written by Mike
Morgan and track 1 arranged by Matt Woodburn and Randy McAllister. Get ready to love this
album. Great songs with original stories, rich vocals and that soulful harmonica by Randy
McAllister. The guitar solos will amaze you by Matt Woodburn, Mike Morgan, Mitchell
Smithey and Todd Blalock. Playing an inspired Bass the legendary Sonny Collie. On B-3 and
Piano Mike Hanna and Tim Allexander. Drums were exceptional with Chuck "Popcorn"
Louden, Danny Cochran and Randy McAllister taking a turn. Randy's background vocalists
were Benita Arterberry-Burns and Angie McWhirter. Great appreciation and thanks to Garith
Roberts for his interest and support in getting this album out. For a fun night of new
music, plan to make the celebration July 14th at 9:00pm. Tickets $15 at the door.

Its been a busy summer for
us so far; both on the ranch and on the road. Sometimes theres just not enough of us to go around. Life sure isnt boring, though. We were part of the
4th of July celebration in Lambert, Montana. Lambert is a cozy little rural town in
eastern Montana. The country folks from miles around came to town for the big day. Now
thats my kind of people. It
was a great show, and they even had a B1 Bomber fly-by.
Were headed up into
Saskatchewan in a few days for the Sandy Creek Gospel Jamboree. You sure need to put that
one on the calendar if theres
any way you can make it
.
lots of great gospel music from a whole bunch of different groups. Ill be helping with the MC stuff again.
Ive got to run, and I know
youve got things to do, but
before you go heres a
little sneak peek at our book Yesterdays Yarns. This is Chapter 44.

Yesterdays Yarns
Chapter 44
Lonesome Coulee Syndrome
Copyright 2007 Ken Overcast
The custom of coverin the
girls up with a veil like they do in the Middle East is something that Ive been giving a little thought. Being
an avid appreciator of the exquisite form and accoutrements of the fairer sex, the
practice seems to me like a real travesty. After all, lookin at pretty girls is about all the entertainment a poor boy like me
can afford. I think the custom must have been started by some poor Arabian cowboy with a
whole tent full of ugly daughters. If you happen to be a poor ol
Dad, and your girls are good lookin there isnt any problem. Hormones bein what they are, youll have em married off in no time. On the other hand if youve got a few bucks and the daughters are a little on the plain side,
there still isnt any hitch.
Money just seems to have a way of making them a lot prettier. A poor old man with ugly
daughters is a bad combination
. hes just up the
creek.
He and his not too gorgeous girls are really the only ones to benefit from this veil deal.
Just think of the possibilities. If youre horse trader enough, you can tell all the young suitors that that
these gals are really hot stuff. Theyre even better
lookin than their Mother,
and boy shes somethin. Of course she has a veil on too, so the poor victim doesnt know shes so ugly shed have to sneak up on a glass of water.
After the marriage, its too
late. A deal is a deal. The new groom sure isnt apt to tell the whole world hes just been slickered. In fact Im certain, knowin
the male mind as I do, that hed be braggin up his new prize, and probably even telling his single buddies, Yea, and the Old Man says that all those
girls are even better lookin than their Mother, and he says shes really somethin. Theres a couple more sisters over there
. you better check into it before someone else snatches em up. After all, what are friends for? Misery loves company, you know.
Mail order brides used to be sort of like that out West. Before telephones and pictures,
neither party really knew just what kind of a deal they were getting into. There have been
a lot of those kinds of arrangements through the years, but the scene has all changed now.
These new computer matches give everyone a little better shot. You can talk to them on the
phone and look at pictures, and assuming everyone is tellin the truth, youve got a little more information available to make an intelligent decision.
That sure doesnt mean that
everyone always uses their head when they make the choice, though. You take Bart Larson
for instance. He and his new honey have stayed together for almost four years now, but
theyve got to be about the
most mismatched pair I ever saw. Bart was sufferin from what is known in these parts as Lonesome Coulee Syndrome. Its
a medical condition that only happens to bachelors that spend several years doin their own cookin, washin their own socks, and sleepin all alone. I guess its really bad stuff, and there just doesnt seem to be any cure.
Well, Bart got it. He was gettin desperate. Somehow he got hooked up with this gal from California. He shouldve smelled a rat. Shes about fifteen years younger than he is
(which aint all that bad),
but shes one of those New
Age meditatin types that
smokes roll-yer-owns. She grows the makins out behind the house, so Bart didnt think too much about that, but he should have been suspicious when
she only went by one name
.
Moonbeam
didnt even > have any last name, and to
make things even worse she was a Democrat.
All those attributes in themselves wouldnt be so bad, except that Bart is a tee-totalin
Norwegian Lutheran that never voted for anyone that
wasnt a Republican. Theyre as different as night and day, but
after Bart drove the two hundred miles to get her off the plane, she looked so good in her
jeans that he thought maybe he could overlook all the little things. Lonesome Coulee
Syndrome strikes again.
They stopped off in town and got hitched right up and Bart and Moonbeam headed out to the
ranch. She settled right in to the rural routine, and because they live at the end of the
road, her runnin around all
summer in the buff didnt
seem to bother the neighbors at all.
Politics seemed to be their biggest difference. Moonbeam was good with the animals, and
had a bucket calf that was always running around the yard. You know how they can be. He
was constantly tryin to get
in the house and always seemed to
need feeding.
That durn calf must be a
Democrat, quipped Bart one
morning. Looky there, hes always lookin
for a handout.
No, I think hes definitely a Republican, answered Moonbeam, taking a long drag off her roll-yer-own. Just look at that pot belly.
It was a constant battle, with each party bringing up
the bucket calfs most
undesirable traits and blaming them on his adverse political connections. It all came to a
head one summer day when the poor little orphan came up on the porch and started buttin on the screen door.
You know, I think youre right, Bart said thoughtfully gazin through the screen. That poor little bugger must be a Republican.
Moonbeam perked right up, baskin
in her apparent victory, when her hubby continued, Hed never qualify for bein a Democratic
President
. the durn thing s a steer.
Keep Smilin
and dont forget to check yer cinch.
