| Darryl
& Allie Gatlin Most of you who are familiar with MKOC and with me, know about the section of
the site that showcases "Hidden Talent". For many, many years, I've showcased
the "Ellis Brothers" in "Hidden Talent".
A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to learn more about
Don Ellis, who is still in Nashville working successfully as a singer/songwriter. I knew
his brother, Darryl, lived in Ohio, was married and still performing, but I couldn't
remember where and at that time, he wasn't on the net.
Well, this week I had the good fortune of meeting Darryl's
webmaster online. She saw the posting about his and Don's 2 CDs on my site and contacted
me to let me know about Darryl and his singing partner in life/wife, Allie and sent the
link to their website where I found the most wonderful surprise... For one, Darryl has
changed so much in looks from his earlier years with his sweet baby face, which was
adorable, but Lordy.. look at him now! WOW! And Allie, lovely and equally as talented as
her husband. They perform together in the northern Ohio are where of all things, I used to
live! Had I only known then.....
I may not be able to see their shows for a long time to
come, but we can all see them and hear them on the beautifully crafted web site that
Lodema (web master) created for them.
They have CDs that will soon you'll soon be able to
purchase from their website but for now, please duck in and look around and listen to the
wonderful song clips. available for your pleasure. You'll be fans just as I've become.
Visit
Darryl & Allie Gatlin
PS. In case you're wondering about the difference in the
last names... When Don and Darryl were signed to a label, their name was already in full
swing by a different family of "Gatlins".. so, they used Don's middle name,
which is Ellis and became the Ellis Brothers. They had some very good success and charted
more than a couple songs. Most folks best remember, "No Sir" which was also the
title of their first album.

The Heart of Texas fair had milder weather than usual following some much needed rain
earlier in the week. Seventies instead of nineties temperature was definitely better. The
show is an outdoor one, near the coliseum where the last professional rodeo of the year,
before the finals in Last Vegas in December, was taking place. The stage show began as the
rodeo ended - Wade took the stage, followed by Trent Willmon, and ended with a 3 song
encore that included both. Great music, great place. We'll add to the web site after we
get pictures. It was great to hug those Texas friends that we hadn't seen in so long, and
such fun to meet new ones! Helen
* CONGRATULATIONS to ..
Dave and Alice McAfee on the arrival of Sandra Jeanne McAfee, their first child, born on
September 14th. Dave, who now plays drums for Toby Keith, was a long time member of Wade's
former touring band, Wheel Hoss. For more news on

Roy Orbison and Country Music
October 19, 2006
By Barbara Orbison
President, Barbara Orbison Productions/Still Working Music
Nashville, TN

As many of you may already know, I have created a petition to urge the US Postal Service
to issue a stamp in honor of my husband, Roy Orbison. I have reached out to government
leaders, friends and fans from all walks of life. I am writing to you, the Country Radio
family, to request your support to Give Roy His Stamp by visiting www.royorbison.com and
clicking the STAMP on the home page.
As we all know, Roy was there at the birth of rock and roll with Buddy Holly and with
fellow Sun Records pioneers Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.
And while he became a Pop Rock artist to many, his heart was steeped in Country. When Roy
moved to Nashville, he did so at the suggestion of his life long friend, Johnny Cash. Roy
embraced Nashville and the Country Music community as his home.

Kenny Chesney
Amazon.com Review
Live country albums are relatively scarce these days, and that's regrettable.
Granted, the studio is a remarkable place, yet there's something about a quality concert
recording--the immediacy and raw interaction with the audience--that no studio effort can
match. While most concert albums are recorded at one location, Kenny Chesney created this
collection from tapes of five years of shows at various locales. The material reflects the
past eight years of his career, including "How Forever Feels" from 1998,
"She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" from 1999, and "What I Need to Do" from
2000. "When the Sun Goes Down" comes complete with Uncle Kracker, who appeared
on the single. There's an edgy version of 2005's "Beer in Mexico" and a
remarkable performance of "Anything But Mine" in which a surprised Chesney
stands by as the audience takes over the chorus. What's amazing is the blazing-hot
consistency of the band throughout. While their backing reflects Chesney's arena-rock
influences (no number is shorter than four minutes), his charisma, energetic presence, and
ability to connect is pure country. --Rich Kienzle

Colonel Buster Doss (June 2005)
MY POINT OF (RE)VIEW Colonel Buster Doss Ode To A Hero
By Danny Grae
While my reviews are generally about musical artists and their recordings, this
"review" is going to be a little different as I honor the memory of a very
special man - Colonel Buster Doss who passed away on August 6th, 2006.
As children, we all had our heroes. Superman, the Lone Ranger, a teacher, a friend -
someone who went above and beyond the call of duty to help others and whose efforts made a
lasting impression on our lives. Some of us are even fortunate enough to find such heroes
as adults. I am one of those fortunates.
Several years ago my wife, Susan, made numerous cold canvas calls to various record labels
and agents to drum up some interest in my recordings. Of all the calls and contacts made,
only one proved fruitful. And it marked the beginning of a new leg in my musical journey -
a journey that would lead me to Colonel Buster Doss. A man who I would first come to know
as an honest, trustworthy promoter (a rarity in the music business). A man who would open
doors in Tennessee for this "damn Yankee" that would have otherwise gone
unopened. Buster single-handedly helped elevate my musical career to a new level of
professionalism for which I will always be grateful. Our business relationship eventually
turned into a friendship - one that evolved despite the odds of time and distance getting
in the way. I've always felt so lucky to have him in my corner and honored to be able to
call him my friend.
If you read his bio, you'd be amazed at the breadth of his talents and accomplishments. I
couldn't possibly name them all here because of space limitations, but let me relate a few
of the "highlights". In 1945 Buster appeared in several Hollywood western movies
as "Bronco Buck Cody" and "The Cactus Kid". Became a member of the
Louisiana Hayride in 1948 along with Hank Williams, Kitty Wells and Jim Reeves. During the
mid 50's he owned seven radio stations. Formed Wizard Records in 1959, which became the
first major independent record label on Music Row in Nashville. In 1963 Buster managed
country artists Billy Grammer, Billy Walker, Sky King among others. Opened his first of
seven "Frontier Jamboree Music Theaters" in 1969. Then in 1983, he appeared on
Broadway in the lead role of "The Vitonka Medicine Show". Besides these
"highlights", Buster has written over 500 recorded songs, produced thousands of
records and worked with many of country music's elite from Hank Williams to Dolly Parton
to Willie Nelson to The Oak Ridge Boys.
In recent years, Buster launched The Colonel Buster Doss Music Group, which has helped
promote the fledgling careers of many independent country music artists like myself. This
vision of promoting independent country music will continue as his wife, Barbara and a
select team follow in his footsteps and build upon the foundation he so carefully laid.
We should all be so lucky to have led such a full and successful life as Buster. He was
bigger than life and yet was one of the most humble and unpretentious people I've ever met
in the music industry. He was a guiding light and inspiration and his passing has left a
void both artistically and emotionally for many. I will miss him dearly, but am so
grateful that I was able to enjoy a brush with greatness and meet a hero
firsthand.
I would say "rest in peace", but those of us that knew Buster know that resting
is not an option for him. He probably entered the pearly gates and started planning the
first ever "Jamboree On A Cloud". And by now has probably signed several
independent angels to his new "Starbound" record label and will promote them in
his first of seven "Heavenly Frontier Music Theaters". So, instead I'll just
say, "Til we meet again, my friend - my hero".

From the Artists
"We just all love music," says lead vocalist Jason Albert as he begins
chronicling the band's early days. "The core of the band was me, Craig and Todd
starting out. Then we added Mike and Keith. Chuck's not been with us that long. We've
known him for a long time, but he recently joined the band and he just fits like a glove.
It's been wonderful."
However in 1997, they got their first taste of that dream becoming a reality when they
performed at the final June Jam, an annual concert held in Ft. Payne each year by country
music legends Alabama. When they took the stage in front of more than 20,000 screaming
fans, they were surprised and elated to see people holding up Heartland signs and shouting
their name. It was an especially poignant moment for Todd Anderson. "Alabama had been
such a huge influence," he says. "Alabama was the first concert I went to when I
was six-years-old and they were the greatest band in country music. When we were fortunate
enough to play the June Jam, it really summed it up. There were no other career options
after that."
Jason agrees. "We always knew we wanted to do it," he says of pursuing a music
career. "We dreamed about it, but that was one of the defining moments. We've played
some big shows. We've played with a lot of big people. When you actually get up there and
get a taste of it, it tastes GOOD!"
Heartland became known for delivering a great live show. "I heard somebody say `If
you take some Beach Boys and a little bit Alabama and put them in a cup and shake them up,
you get the Heartland sound,'" Keith West says. "We like putting on a very
lively show that might make you think back to the 80's rock days--maybe not as crazy, but
we do like to move around and entertain the people."
"There's six guys in the band and we like to give everybody six different things to
look at," says Jason. "Everybody has their own little thing and everybody is
very good at what they do. And as opposed to having one focal point, then you have seven.
There are a lot of different things going on. When we get up there, we like to really give
people something for their money. It's not like they are just listening to the CD, they
are getting the whole package." "There's a lot of stuff that we have on each
other and you kind of get that when you've known someone since the 5th grade," says
Craig.
Just then Chuck feels compelled to share a juicy tidbit from the band's past. "These
guys had the biggest mullets, except for Jason," he says with a laugh. "There
were some serious mullets in this band. If the mullet nation had a currency, these guys
would have been on the $100 bill."
