REVIEW: 'Life Ain`t Always Beautiful'
The great thing about country music is how it can impart so much truth in less than four
minutes. This powerful ballad will speak to everyone with lines such as 'The struggles
make you stronger/and the changes make you wise/and happiness has its own way of taking
its sweet time.' Gary Allan turns in a potent performance:

Country Music Critics Poll 2006
Gary was voted top male vocalist in the Nashville Scene's Country Music Critic's Poll, as
well as Number 2 album and Number 5 single. Hurt can be just as hard to overcome as
temptation. The No. 5 single, Gary Allans Best I Ever Had, seems like a
conventional breakup song on first listen; the guy tries to rationalize that
its not so bad.

Mark Holt & Kimberlee Holt Tully Release New
Single
Mark Holt & Kimberlee Holt Tully have released
"One Last Dance", a lost love/heartbreaker bluegrass song. "One Last
Dance" was written by Mark Holt, and can be found on the latest Mark Trail
Compilation disc.
Mark Holt and Kimberlee Holt Tully's music has a 1970's retro acoustic classic country and
bluegrass sound with an edgy kick. Smother describes them by saying "They live up to
their title with their Native American sounds routed through the veins of roots rock,
country, and folk. Americana never sounded this good."
When this brother and sister team released their debut album, Acoustically Native, they
used producer by Bill VornDick, who has also worked with Alison Krauss.

Dear DJ's,
Thank you so much for playing "Molasses in the Moonlight"!

ON WRITING SERIOUS LYRICS, Part 2.
I wouldn't try to tell other songwriters how to write. I just explain my feelings on the
subject, in case it might be of help to somebody.
Love is the most popular song subject, but it can be treated in endless ways. In this
song, the lovers are separated by time, space, and maybe life and death. This approach
works well with symbolism:
(I sing first)
"I woke up in the night
and saw the moonlight shining through my window.
I sat up and looked around,
startled by a sound I thought I'd heard.
There was something in the air.
I could feel it as I stood there by the window,
Like the sighing of a lover,
or the whisper of a long forgotten word."
(Misty sings):
"From across the silver years,
beyond the sea of time,
where the wind blows,
Flies the spirit of my love,
like the shadow of a Big Black Bird."
(Listen to the song here):
http://www.kokosuniverse.com/avi/jm/wma/shadow_of_a_big_black_bird.htm
* * *
Here's a more intimate treatment of the same subject, where the two people are together,
speaking to each other face to face.
"In neon lights and smoky places,
We drank with lonely faces,
Playing at the social graces,
Trying to fill those empty spaces;
Sick and tired of one night stands,
And white skin left by wedding bands.
Now my life is in your hands,
I'm High on You.
I'll cover you on winter nights,
apologize when we have fights,
And never lose my appetite for the things you do.
We don't need those smoky places.
You fill all the empty spaces.
By your side I'm satisfied,
I'm High on You."
(Listen to the song here)
http://www.kokosuniverse.com/avi/jm/wma/high_on_you.htm
* * *
In this love song, the lovers are geographically separated. This lends itself to a lot of
picturesque detail.
"The weeds are brown and dry along the Indiana blacktop,
and the heatwaves on the highway make it shine.
Got your picture in my pocket with your number on the back,
and A Handful of Dimes.
With a little bit of luck I'll catch a truck down through Kentucky,
and I'll see you then by Thursday suppertime.
Baby, we'll get by, we can make it if we try...
On A Handful of Dimes."
(Here's a lo-fi sample):
http://lswazzo.topcities.com/JackNMisty/AHandfulOfDimes.ram
My point is this:
I try to avoid the cliche rut, tempting as it is. There are a lot of good songwriters
already ahead of us in line, so we have to come at it from a different angle. Provide
something different, and if it's good, it will work.

MidPoint Music Festival: Five Straight Years of Rockin The Midwest
In 2005, Midpoint Music Festival drew 50,000 fans and 300 independent bands to
Cincinnati for three days of concerts in downtown clubs. Now MidPoint, the Midwests
biggest and longest-running independent music festival, is back again on September 20-23,
2006.
Other festivals come and go, but MidPoint has been bringing hundreds of great
unsigned bands to Cincinnati for five straight years, says festival co-founder &
indie songwriter Bill Donabedian.
MidPoint Music Festival has really put Cincinnati on the map as THE place to go to
hear great independent music.
Cincinnati: Where RockN Roll Was Conceived
Esquire Magazine (April 2004) placed Cincinnati at number 7 for Cities That
Rock. Cincinnati has a long, proud, diverse musical heritage: from the 1950s when
Cincinnati's King Records gave birth to the soul and funk music of Rock and Roll Hall of
Famers James Brown and Bootsy Collins, to the 80s synthesized dance R&B of Midnight
Star, through the 90s when Adrian Belew and The Bears, Afghan Whigs, AssPonys, and Over
the Rhine pioneered the "Alternative" sound.
Today, Over The Rhine, Ass Ponys and newer bands like Moth and hiphop star J. Grams
("Big
Spender") continue to make waves from their home base in Cincinnati.
MidPoint: For The Love of Music
For new fans and die-hard music lovers, MidPoint Music Festival is the place to hear the
best in new independent music, including pop, hiphop, soul, rock, funk, metal, punk,
electronica, singer-songwriter, altcountry, blues and jazz.
Bands: Listen Up!
Bands accepted to MidPoint may choose to receive free admission to MidPoints
industry conference, where theres more networking than you can handle.
Previous panelists at MidPoints music industry conference include Joe Armenia, Vice
President of Music Promotion for MTV, and producer Erwin Musper, whose clients include
David Bowie, Elton John and Mick Jagger.
Past Midpoint Music Festival industry conference keynotes include Greg Dulli (The Twilight
Singers and The Afghan Whigs) and Art Alexakis (of Everclear) .
MidPoint: Truly Independent
All-Volunteer Staff
No politics, no bartering, no label showcases. Just the best. The MidPoint Music Festival
selection process utilizes judges from around the country with ties to the music industry
from radio DJs to music editors to recording engineers. Each band/ artist is
independently judged and scored.
All Independent Original Artists/Bands of all genres: MidPoint Music Festival does not
book signed national acts. The festival is all about brand-spankin NEW music.
Fifty-thousand people attended MidPoint last year because they had the opportunity to
discover something new.

"AMERICA'S
GOODWILL AMBASSADOR" CHERYL PEACH ACCEPTS BATON FROM KATE SMITH
Patriotic Singer & Army Veteran Makes "Call to Service"
Public Service Announcement to Broadcast in Nashville
Cheryl Peach Gives Tribute to Legendary Kate Smith
on American Salute CD with Stirring Rendition of "God Bless America"
Cheryl
Peach, one of our nations premier patriotic singers, has begun a campaign to
encourage Americans to take a more active role in supporting our troops. Leading the way,
Cheryl Peach is currently broadcasting a public service announcement on Channel 49 in
Nashville to provide specific suggestions on what folks can do to put their patriotic
feelings into action.
During a distinguished professional singing career that has spanned over 30 years, Cheryl
Peach has performed thousands of times at venues including Lincoln Center, Hollywood Bowl,
Disney World, Disneyland, Texas State Fair, July 4th Celebrations at Baltimore Harbor
Place, Opryland, Opry Mills, and recently as part of an Operation Welcome Home event near
Nashville with Lee Greenwood as headliner.
Cheryl Peach grew up on a farm in the foothills of the Appalachians near Gettysburg,
Pennsylvania. Cheryl Peach has been a singer with a cause all of her life. In the wake of
the Vietnam conflict she became a lead singer for the Armys top touring band, the US
Army Field Band for about nine years. As a Goodwill Ambassador her mission was
to help rekindle patriotism among the American people.
As an Army veteran herself, Cheryl Peach has chosen to send out a Call to Service to
Our Country. Cheryl has a few suggestions on how to get on board:
1) Visit a recruiting office to explore a career in the US armed forces for
yourself, a relative, or a friend. Most folks might not realize it, but about 4 out of 5
jobs in the military are careers such as nurses, doctors, clergy, computer techs, pilots,
publicists, rescue workers, engineers, firefighters, police officers, administrative
assistants, cooks, musicians, accountants, plumbers, and truck drivers. Check it
out!!
2) Buy a new American-built car or truck that gets at least 30 mpg. Keep your big
SUVs and trucks for when you need them. But for running errands, save gas and money while
reducing our dependence on foreign oil by driving a fuel-efficient car or truck.
3) Give a couple of hours per week of your time to a good cause. As examples: visit
a veterans hospital to support our troops; volunteer to help out a charitable, fraternal,
or faith-based organization. Consider participating in Operation Welcome Home and
Operation Gratitude.
Today, Cheryl Peach once again sees a divided America over an increasingly unpopular war.
Cheryl's mission is to help bring Americans together through music, and her new CD
American Salute aims at just that. In a stirring musical tribute to legendary patriotic
singer Kate Smith on the American Salute CD, Cheryl Peach sings a powerful rendition of
God Bless America guaranteed to unite our souls as Americans.Contact: Steve Levesque, James Levesque

| International Dance Council CID Dance Day preparations
On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, World Dance Day will be celebrated all
over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts.
The International Dance Council CID has prepared the following guidelines as a useful
checklist for persons institutionally involved in the wider field of dance: teachers,
choreographers, group leaders, journalists, researchers, associations, suppliers,
organizations etc.
Object
The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to
the art of dance. Special emphasis should be given to addressing a new public,
people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.
Events
Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door courses, public rehearsals,
lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV
programs, visits, street shows etc.
Organizers
Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations
and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be
organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public
school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.
Content
Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.
Make sure that you include general information on the art of dance, its history, its
importance to society, its universal character. This can be done in a short speech, a note
in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the
event different from dance activities taking place any other day.
Read a message from a prominent personality, a poem, a passage from a text by a famous
author.
Coordination
In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.
It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.
Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which
should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day.
Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not
normally attend dance events.
Location
At best, events should take place in new places, such as streets, parks,
squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc.
By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event
dedicated to the universal family of dancers.
Prof. Alkis Raftis
President of the CID
World Dance Day has been established in 1982 in view of
attracting attention to the art of dance, every year on the 29th of April. On that day,
dance companies, dance schools, organizations and individuals are asked to organize an
activity addressing an audience larger than their usual one.
The International Dance Council (Conseil International de la Danse - CID) is the official
umbrella organization for all forms of dance in all countries of the world. It is a
non-governmental non-profit organization (NGO) founded in 1973 within the UNESCO
headquarters in Paris, where it is based. Its purpose is to act as a worldwide forum
bringing together international, national and local organizations as well as individuals
active in dance. It represents the interests of the dance world at large and consults
accordingly governments and international agencies.

Attached a rant from our beloved songwriter, host, and
muscian... CJ Watson Folks, let me tell ya: There are some basic and important rules of
the music business at work at your favorite local writer's night.
1. If you always bring people, the host will take note, as will any music biz types
present. Why? With the host, it's because it brings in business, which helps keep the
writer's night going and the host paid. With the 'suits' it shows grass roots support and
lends an air of power. Also, half of the people in the industry have no ears of their own.
The icon of the lonely troubador as tragic/romantic figure is on the wane. Posse is juice
but choose carefully and make it 'worth the squeeze' as we East Nashvillians say. Which
brings us to:
2. If you bring important, or at least really cool or nice people with you, it acts as a
multiplier: Bringing a hundred convicted goat molesters out to see you is not nearly as
impressive as bringing three goat molesters who are publishers and/or A&R reps.
Why? Because important people, really cool people and nice people all attract OTHER
people.
3. Be a nice person, a good person and, if possible, a really cool person. It will impress
the host AND attract more people.
Here's the deal: I'm going to use my buddy, Tom Templeman, here, because he has
illustrated these rules and deserves the credit. Tom is a pretty good writer but he's
getting in on the 'Nashville' game a little late, like I did. He knows he has to be more
organized to stay ahead of the steady stream of young, beautiful, financially unencumbered
hopefuls who arrive daily in the Music City. So, he finds a few good co-writer/performing
buddies (in this case Charlie and Ashley), one of whom is among the aforementioned young
'uns. They work together to complement each other on stage. They try to bring people,
sometimes important people. They are nice and good and pretty cool on the whole. When Tom
calls me to book a round, I take all this into account. He's a good enough writer that I'd
book him anyway but these factors definitely bump him up a time slot or two. He's
conducting himself as a professional, showing respect for craft and community and proving
he's serious about being here. These skills, and others, will stand one in good stead on
the Row: I was recently surprised at a publishing meeting when one Creative Director
recounted hearing about a favor I'd done for a Creative 'D' at another company (one of the
ones with ears!). I didn't do it to get ahead: It involved sending him another writer (as
in ONE WHO IS NOT ME) whom I thought he would really dig. He did, I'm glad and it all
comes back around. Be a good person, a nice person. The 'important' and 'really cool'
person will grow out of that. So, when Tom called and asked for a spot on an already
overfull night, I started juggling, looking for a spot. Still working on it, Tom. I'll
make some more calls tomorrow. You earned 'em.
That's the TRUE politics of this town. It's easy for the uninitiated to call it
clique-ishness but it really amounts to being a good person and a pro in ALL facets of the
Biz.
Peace, Love and Flowers, CJ
Roy Orbison Commemorative Stamp
A special letter from Barbara Orbison:
Dear Friends:
I am actively petitioning the US Postal Service to issue a stamp for my husband, Roy
Orbison in honor of what would have been his 70th Birthday. This is a grass roots campaign

circles, the petition I have circulating the US House of Representatives is nearly
complete including a personal letter of support from the President of the United States! I
have an on-line petition which now has over 4000 names and I want to thank all the people
who have taken the time to VOTE FOR ROY. And now I am asking you TODAY to please VOTE FOR
ROY by simply clicking on the below link, scroll down and then click on to sign petition
