February 19, 2006 |
Hi All,
| I can't believe it's already
Sunday night... I don't know where the time goes... BTW.. if any of you know, please let
me know.. I'd like to get some of mine back! I wanted
to take a moment here to say a few words about a new "Community" website that I
find very aggravating. "MySpace.com" has become very popular with many folks for
a variety of reasons. I found out about it a few months ago because there was an artist
who created a "home page" there and asked me to link to it... after seeing what
was on that particular page, I was shocked, replied to the artist that I could not, in
good conscience link to a site that allowed porn to be blatantly advertised. Of course,
the artist hadn't realized that folks were just walkin' on to that page and posting their
links. This is a free-for-all of folks posting whatever they choose to post on anyone's
personal page. Since that time, there's been quite a few artists posting their info there
to get more exposure, but there's more being exposed than just their info and of course,
it's like fighting spam... you can delete it one day and the next day there's twice as
much relisted.
I received an email from a long time fan of Child Alert
Foundation and she began telling me her thoughts about MySpace.com, which were pretty much
the same as mine. |

|
"Years how they fly...I check out
your sites from time to time and wow they are huge now! You must be out straight. I was
emailing you of this new site that is of karaoke singing or artist that would like to be
heard. www.ksolo.com
I also wanted to know if you all are keeping a watch on the MySpace.com program
that is getting a lot of public
watch at this time.... I just heard of it and a few months back and checked out the site
to see what our children our seeing its sick and free access to them. We the parents don't
have a lot to say or should I say voices being heard. I know your into things like this so
I wanted to see if this has been brought to your attention or if you could get it out on
parents beware of what this site is and ages allowed but any can get in. Let me know what
you can do on your site to get the message out to help protect our children."Well, this is my first act of informing others about the callousness
of MySpace.com. As for what to do about it, I'm not quite sure yet, but I hope all of you
will inform your friends and ask them NOT to use this venue for exposure.. there's more
being exposed there than just their talent. There are so many GOOD sites that PR only
music, no explicit ads, etc. and you can get just as much exposure without giving some
low-life the opportunity to "expose their talents" at your expense.. and by that
I mean your reputation. To date, I have refused to link to anyone that I know is posted on
MySpace and will continue to do so until they clean up their act.

Payola Investigated by the Government!I wanted to share this info with all of you. Most artists are aware
of "Pay for Play" or "Payola" and how it's used to get one's
recordings heard, and even to #1 slots. Now the government is investigating and
prosecuting for this illegal payoff for fame. I saw the show on ABC's Primetime Thursday
night and wanted to share this info with all of you.. in or out of the business. This is
why indies have such a hard time being heard, and why fans don't always get to hear what
they want to hear. I feel it's important for all of you to check this out. You can watch
the video broadcast of the show or read the text of the show, whichever is more convenient
for you. I've also included the other 3 articles that came up in my search for
"payola" as they all have something to do with radio play. I want to point out
ahead of time, it is NOT the artists who are guilty of payola.. this goes on between
record companies and radio execs. The DJs are also innocent.. on the major stations, the
DJ has no control over the playlist.. they spin what they're told to spin. Read on.. I
think you'll all find this very enlightening.

REVIEW: 'Life Ain`t Always Beautiful'
The great thing about country music is how it can impart so much truth in less than four
minutes. This powerful ballad will speak to everyone with lines such as 'The struggles
make you stronger/and the changes make you wise/and happiness has its own way of taking
its sweet time.' Gary Allan turns in a potent performance:

Country Music Critics Poll 2006
Gary was voted top male vocalist in the Nashville Scene's Country Music Critic's Poll, as
well as Number 2 album and Number 5 single. Hurt can be just as hard to overcome as
temptation. The No. 5 single, Gary Allans Best I Ever Had, seems like a
conventional breakup song on first listen; the guy tries to rationalize that
its not so bad.

MIDAS RECORDS NASHVILLE Announces
Signing of Country Star STEVE AZAR
At Wednesdays CRS Late Night Bash
The music industry and radio attendees at Midas Records Nashvilles CRS bash on
Wednesday were in for some surprises throughout the night. After Midas newcomer
Lindsey Grant performed, the newly launched label announced its latest member to the Midas
Nashville family - country star Steve Azar, who also got on stage to play for all the
industry movers and shakers. Midas Records debut artists Emerson Drive capped off
the evening with their performance. Azars first project as a joint venture with his
new label will be Indianola, presently scheduled for a Summer 2006 release.
"Steve Azar is an artist I had always admired from afar for his great voice and
songwriting - 'Til Monday' is one of my favorite songs. When I finally had the chance to
meet him, it was obvious to me that this guy is a star. We are thrilled to work with him
at Midas records says Keith Follese, Midas Records A&R.
In addition to Follese and Brad Allen in the A&R department, the labels staff
consists of some of todays most experienced and respected industry veterans such as
Mary Befera, Mike Martinovich, Stan Moress, Bob Reeves, and Al Schiltz.
Steve Azar, one of country music's brightest young stars today, burst onto the country
music scene in 2001 with his undeniable charisma as a performer and prolific songwriting
talent. In 2001, his successful debut album for Mercury Records, Waitin On Joe
produced the No. 2 hit, I Dont Have To Be Me (Til Monday)" that is
now approaching 3 million spins on radio, making it one of the most played songs in recent
years. The follow-up single and title track Waitin On Joe became a Top
20 hit, with the video featuring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman reaching No. 1
on CMT. On Indianola, Azar serves as producer and writer/co-writer on all fourteen tracks
and claims the music takes you on a journey back to his Delta roots. ExxonMobil will
sponsor Azars 2006 tour promoting the new CD.
Says Azar, Im really looking forward to this partnership between Midas Records
and my new imprint label, Dang Records. Both Keith Follese and Brad Allen have given me
the creative freedom Ive always hoped for. Im also excited about working with
Bob Reeves, Midas National Director of Promotion as Ive known and respected
him for many years. His ethics, his integrity and his vibe are unmatched. This is indeed,
a very humbling and unique opportunity for me."
L to R: Midas Records' Southwest Regional Manager, Mike Severson; Southeast
Regional Manager, Clay Henderson; West Coast Regional Manager, Stacy Nichols; Midas
Records' artist Steve Azar; National Director of Promotion, Bob "Goldfinger"

NEW
RECORD DEAL FOR TRAVIS TRITT
(As reported in Hot Country News, Edited By Stuart Cameron)
One of Nashville's newest independent record labels, Category 5 Records, has
announced the signing of Country superstar Travis Tritt to a multi album record deal.
"Not only is Travis perhaps the best male vocalist in a generation, his talent
transcends narrow definitions," says Category 5 President/CEO Raymond Termini.
Tritt said, "The determination and enthusiasm of the Category 5 team makes it the
perfect home for my music as I embark on this next stage of my career. The promotional
savvy and level of support they've pledged meets or exceeds anything I've seen from the
major labels I've been associated with."
Tritt is a two-time GRAMMY award winner and has sold more than 25 million albums to date.
He will be the flagship artist for CATEGORY 5.

Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan
 THE COMEDIAN.
I worked in a show club in Detroit with The Dawn Breakers quartet. The emcee was a very
funny comedian named Frankie Rapp.
He did an impression of a gay lighthouse. I saw him in a Jerry Lewis movie once.
There was a classy female singer on the show who was Frankies ex-wife. She told me
she didnt like old comedians. Shed been married to two of them. After
comedians make us laugh we expect them to be jolly in real life. They can be quite
different from their onstage persona.
Mickey Rooney is one of our finest comedic actors, but backstage we found him grouchy,
unfriendly, and rude. Lou Costello got 60% and Bud Abbott got 40% of their income. When
asked if he thought he needed Abbott, he said this:
I could have him painted on the curtain.
Misty and I have known hilarious comics who were serious depressives. We got involved with
one who was a tyrant.
I was producing a Starday Records artist named Rusty Diamond, who had a knack for getting
rich backers. Rusty wanted to put together a Vegas type stage show. I knew he wasnt
ready for that, so I suggested we hire a comedy coach named Danny Rogers.
Rustys backer was paying for the coaching sessions, and the rent on a rehearsal
hall. Danny could be funny, lovable, humble, devious, and cruel. He could be different
people at different moments. He did so many characters, I didnt know which was the
real him. I think it was the mean one.
Hed been fired from Milton Berles Vegas show for being too funny. He told me
Berle was right. It was his show.
The potential comedy group consisted of Misty and me, Paul McLaughlin our sax player, and
Rusty was to be the star. Rogers began calling Paul the hick and riding him
mercilessly. I was the designated straight man, Misty was the chick, and it
never became clear what Rusty was supposed to do.
It did become clear that Rusty was not going to be the star. Danny was getting paid to
train him, but Rusty was on his way out.
It was morphing into The Danny Rogers Group. He was a terrific comedian, and I was to be
his Dean Martin. He didnt even want Paul in the act. Thats why he made his
life miserable. But we made sure Paul stayed.
To be fair, Danny did teach us a lot about stagecraft and comedy. He taught us some
hilarious routines, but he yelled at us all the time, which took the fun out of it.
Rustys backers pulled the plug and he left the group, Paul the hick was
miserable, and Misty and I were imagining fun ways to kill Danny Rogers.
Misty bought an expensive new dress and Danny commanded her to Never wear that
again.
Then he booked our act into a famous showplace in the Caribbean. We all knew at that
moment that we were not going to be on any island with Danny Rogers. We were actually
afraid to tell him. He had become the cruel warden. But we did tell him, and he
wasnt happy First he became the poor soul whos been hurt, to make us feel
guilty. He was good! Finally he got mad, did a troll dance, and left.
Maybe I made up the troll dance.
In the 1970s, after wed had several hit records, I was calling old names in
our address book, for some dumb reason. I got Rogers on the phone, and asked if he
remembered us, and he said this:
Yeah. Too bad you never made it.

Pools Are You Swimming Yet?
By Jaci Rae
The winter months have hit us and unless you live in Southern California, most
people arent swimming in open-air pools any longer.
Until recent times, Indie Artists and the labels they set up for themselves had a hard
time getting their music heard by anyone outside their own backyard pool of fans. With
guerilla marketing finally becoming common practice and online music stores becoming a
main stay for the music aficionado, record pools are now open for business to the general
indie population.
What is a record pool? Basically, a record pool is a membership of DJs that act as
an intermediary between DJs and the music makers. The power behind a record pool is
that it can reach a mass, global market in lightening speed.
As of 2005, there are over 7000 DJ's and industry professionals who are part of this
digital revolution. In order for a DJ to belong to a record pool, they must pay a monthly
association fee to obtain the latest and most current music.
Frequently this music is available to them before it becomes available to mainstream
radio, and because of that, record pools quite often have more of an initial impact than
the popular mainstream outlets.
The power radio programmers have over radio, clubs and street music is now handed over to
the DJs who participate in the record pools, allowing them to have control over what
they break.
So how can you get an invitation to swim in their pool? No invitations necessary, but you
must have a good professional product that is available in digital format (although I did
find one that accepted vinyl).
Some of the record pools now require that you have your own label, meaning that you
dont submit as your band name. That is easily done by setting up your own label (too
much information to go into here, but you can find the information inside my book The
Indie Guide to Music, Marketing and Money).
Once you have the business side taken care of, start searching the internet using the
keywords, record pool, and then contact them to be certain that your style of
music is part of their repertoire.
Dont randomly send out your online or hard copy press kit to every record pool you
find, just as you wouldnt send your music to every station you discover. E.g., a
country record pool isnt interested in acid rock and a classical record pool
wont be interested in spinning a blue grass tune. Then begin to submit your CDs
using the contact information you acquired. Do you homework and beware of companies that
dont post charts or may be music collectors.
Here are a few record pools I found on the web:
http://www.americanrecordpool.com
(they represent an assortment of music, including R&B, Hip-Hop and Dance.)
http://www.keystonespinners.com (they
represent Hip Hop, Latin, World and Jazz)
http://www.vipchicago.com (they represent
Dance, Hip Hop, and Latin)
The time for indie artists is upon us, but you better take advantage of record pools now,
before someone puts a no swimming without a lifeguard sign out. Jaci Rae

New Street Pitches and Upcoming CoursesThis week's quotes:
"I'm so glad I joined SongU.com" - quote submitted on 2/17/06 by SongU.com
member, Kaye W., TN
"I'm really excited about what you guys are doing and continue to do. Once again, you
confirm the wisdom of my choice to join SongU.com." - quote submitted on 2/16/06 by
SongU.com member, Van B., IL
Hi everyone,
It's getting cold here where we live, so I hope you're staying warm this February! We had
a great gig at the Bluebird last week. Fortunately, the predicted snow held off so we had
a full crowd. Thanks to SU faculty Pat/Pete Luboff, Dave Gibson/Daisy Dern, Marcia Ramirez
and Nancy Moran and Fett for sharing their talents with us. This week I spent the better
part of the week at a distance education conference learning about all the new trends in
distance education...cool stuff that we'll continue to incorporate into SongU.com to keep
us on the cutting edge on our virtual campus.
More Connections: New Street Pitches and Unscreened Pitching Opportunities!
Speaking of cool stuff...we've rolled out the new Spin N' Pitch upgrades this past week.
We've contracted with an experienced A&R consultant who will be screening pitches and
burning songs on to CD for their upcoming meetings. These special "street
pitches" will allow members whose songs are forwarded to get their songs directly
into the hands of the decision makers. We've also added special "unscreened"
direct pitches that allow our members to directly send material for independent pitch
opportunities in Country, R&B, Christian, Urban, Jazz and more. And while getting
songs recorded will still require a magical combination of a great song, the right artist,
undeterred determination and some luck, we hope these new features and opportunities
associated with Spin N' Pitch will help our members get their best songs out there (you
can view all the current pitching opportunities http://www.songu.com/pubSpinnpitch.asp).
As always, there is no extra charge to participate in pitching opportunities using Spin N'
Pitch for our Platinum Members.
Upcoming Online Courses: Kids, Networking, Business and Gear

in the process. Meets on Tuesday 2/21 at 9pm ET.

Phillips Oland, as she breaks down a couple of her songs from the Grammy nominated album,

* BUS 250, The Business Of The Independent Songwriter I. Join hit writer, Craig Bickhardt,

(noon) ET, beginning March 4th.

Demos Really Competitive?" Special talk with publisher, producer and songplugger,
Cole Wright. Meets Monday, February 27 at 1:00pm ET in the e-Auditorium.
* TECH 220, Getting Killer Sounds From Your Gear. Join producer and Tech Editor for
Performing Songwriter Magazine, Fett, for this special two week e-Workshop where you'll
