| Hi All, Bet ya didn't think I could do it, did ya! LOL.. I wasn't sure
either so don't feel bad! I often think... "if there were no spammers, how much work
could I actually accomplish?" I mean, don't these folks EVER get tired? I have tons
of blocks put up on my ISP mailbox, yet each time I log in, I have to delete 100s of
spam.. there's the obvious ones that I can just go down the list and check mark for
deletion.. then there's all the others that I'm never quite sure about; No Subject.. about
50% of these are spam, the rest from folks who either forget, or don't think it's
necessary to put a subject header in. Trust me folks, when you deal with as much mail as I
do, the subject header if VERY important. Then there's the emails that read off from my
email addresses like Name That Tune. It's sad that I even have to check those before
downloading, but once the spammers get an ID to use on ya, they just hammer ya to death
with this junk. I used to report them, but it became a full time job in itself so I just
delete, delete and delete more until I've narrowed the list down to real mail.. then I can
download and start sorting it in my in box. Silly thing to gripe about, I guess but it's
been plaguing me lately and I just had to get that out of my system.

Music Industry Veteran
TED JOSEPH
Eyes The Future Of Independent Music As A Consultant In The
Ever-Burgeoning Realm Of Indie Virtual Record Labels
* * *
Brick And Mortar Record Companies Are
Slowly Giving Way To Strategically Picked Teams Of
Music Industry Leaders From Across U.S.
* * *
Longtime Warner Bros. Execs Marketing Approach
Incorporates Traditional Media (Radio, Print)
With Wide Range of Digital Media and Internet Promotions
While corporate owned major record labels scramble to keep up with all of the latest
marketing angles available in the digital media and internet age, savvy indie artists and
promotion teams are quickly taking advantage of every last medium available to push the
hottest new sounds into the ipods, MP3s and hands of the discerning consumer.
Almost as quickly as a listener can download their favorite song, traditional brick and
mortar record labels are giving way to virtual record companies--outfits which
lack a single physical address, but boast a widespread gathering of strategically
handpicked powerhouse executives to head up traditional promotions divisions (radio, print
and TV publicity) and those created by the new media age (internet marketing and digital
media).
And just who is putting together these teams?
Veteran industry execs like Ted Joseph, who have refashioned themselves as consultants,
applying their many years of knowledge and experience to the modern age where the
opportunities to sell music are limitless. Joseph spent twenty-one of his first 25 years
in the business at Warner Bros., launching his career as a merchandiser in Detroit before
holding positions in the companys marketing, sales, radio promotion and distribution
divisions over the years in New York and Los Angeles.
As a consultant for a growing number of labels in the realms of urban, pop, smooth jazz
and country music, hes working with less famous artists in addition to those of the
caliber he dealt with in his corporate daysa roster that included Madonna, Fleetwood
Mac, Prince, Rod Stewart, George Benson, David Sanborn and Al Jarreau. But helming such
exciting and growing indie operations as upstart Alive Records, Joseph is setting the
trend and showing his counterparts how things are being done, working with what he calls
the new model.
I fashioned my career at Warner Bros. to incorporate numerous departments because I
felt knowing how every aspect worked would make me more effective at each task, he
says. Since Ive been consulting independent labels in the areas of my
expertise, Ive notice many of my former contemporaries have disappeared because they
were not willing to keep up with the new model of todays record business. Rather
than run away, Ive embraced it the reality that brick and mortar stores are
diminishing drastically and music is being delivered in all these new, instantly
gratifying ways.
Thats not to say that standard retailers are going to be demolished soon, but
are shifting to the big box retailers such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc., Joseph adds.
Radio still plays a big part in establishing artists, but its not the only
way. To be successful, a young label must implement alternative marketing techniques via
the net and other important strategic technology.
Joseph is especially proud of his involvement with Alive, which launched this last fall
with the release of Labor Pains, the debut from charismatic, traditional minded singer
Michael Lee Austin; the label dropped Deeper, the debut by cutting edge country crossover
vocalist Brandi Valentine, in early 2006.
Traditional radio marketing, brick and mortar distribution and track availability via
digital download sites like itunes, MSN, Napster and Yahoo! Music are just the start of
the push to establish Alive Records as a viable new presence on the scene. Tapping into
the unlimited marketing potential that the internet offers, Alive Records widescale
online database driven strategies will radically change the way products reach targeted
consumers for years to come.
Our mission statement is to expose extremely good music to the traditional and
nontraditional consumer of music products, says Joseph. The bottom line with
any record company is high quality music. All of these ingenious marketing techniques are
in the service of that bottom line. Major labels have been investigating these ideas for
years, but they move very slowly to implement them. We believe that a small label like us
has a tremendous advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
To achieve these aims, Joseph has assembled a strong team of radio promotion and publicity
specialists (Luck Media), established a presence for Austin and Valentine on myspace.com
and implemented a unique branding program for these artists which ranges from
free promo discs and posters to web advertising, banners and an ongoing series of eblasts
to consumers who have indicated an interest in these artists.
The function I serve with Alive, as well as the other companies I work with, is as a
quarterback, he says. I utilize the experience I had running all those
departments at Warners, focusing on the companys basic goal of penetrating the
marketplace with the artists so that the most amount of people can hear their music. While
were getting close to a global distribution deal with Alive, their music has long
been available on Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes, MP3, Launch, Yahoo! Music, AOL Music and a host
of other online sites.
Joseph likens the 10-member team hes assembled for Alive Records to a finely tuned
watch, where all areas (A&R, Business Affairs, Internet Strategy) work independently
but report to one another.
I incorporate a bit of the traditional music business model with the new
model, Joseph continues. While were always making deals to make sure the
internet marketing is up and running on a daily basis, Alives radio team is
penetrating stations and getting good accurate feedback on airplay. Our efforts ensured
that Michael Lee Austin debuted at #30 (and is currently at #27) and Brandi Valentine
debuted at #25 on the New Music Weekly Top Indie Chart. Also included in our task sheet
are little things like making sure we always have ample stock on hand for shipping
orders.
While his passion for music has kept Josephs career thriving long after he left
corporate America, hes aware that over time, he will have to work diligently to stay
one step ahead of the curve as more consultant formed indie companies emerge and
conglomerate run record labels strive to catch up with the modern age.
Today, most major music companies still market and promote music like they did 30
years ago, but a few are making inroads that show theyre catching on to the new
model and type of consumer, he says. Warner Music Group has a web based label
and myspace has a label deal through Universal. The great thing about independent music
making and marketing is not having to sell 20 million units to show a profit. The key is
spending more on clever marketing strategies than on recording. Whats most enjoyable
for me now is gaining the trust of the many labels and projects I work with and being able
to make quick decisions and implement my ideas without dealing with all the crazy
bureaucracy. In the indie music world, the artists arent the only ones enjoying
creative freedom.

| Country Cuts with Roger Ryan. Farewell Tours are certainly in vogue this year. Don
Williams will visit Ireland on his Farewell Tour and will appear at the Royal
Theatre, Castlebar, on April 19, at the INEC Killarney, Co.Kerry, on April 20 and will
play two dates at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin on April 21 and 22.
Don has decided to bring the curtain down on his hugely successful touring career and
retire to his ranch in Nashville. After a career which has spaneed over 30 years I suppose
he is entitled to take it a little easy and enjoy the fruits of his success. To celebrate
Don's Farewell Tour, Universal Records will be releasing a special Greatest Hits Album.
The Eagles are also bringing their Farewell I tour to Ireland for a
concert at Landsdowne Road, Dublin on Saturday June 10. The band- Glen Frey, Don Henley,
Joe Walsh and Timothy B.Schmidt will be performing songs from their more than 30 year
career including such hits as Hotel California, Desperado, Take It To The Limit, Life In
The Fast Lane and Take It Easy. The band will also debut two new songs, One Day At A Time
as well as No More Cloudy Days. The two new songs are featured on their current No.1 DVD,
Farewell I Tour - Live From Melbourne, and it's the first time that a song available only
on DVD has hit the radio Top 10 charts.
Paddy O'Brien celebrated the first of his weekends at Lawlors Hotel,
Dungarvan, Co.Waterford, last weekend and will be back again this weekend with guest
artists to entertain his loyal band of followers. The hotel has reported excellent business
for the two weekends with fans travelling from all parts of Ireland, England, Scotland and
Wales, where Paddy tours reularly, and is extremely popular. Paddy certainly is doing his
bit for the tourist industry at a time of the year when tourists are normally thin on the
ground. I wonder if our Tourist Board is aware of the business that people like Paddy,
Daniel O'Donnell and others bring to this country and if they give them any credit for it.
Paddy also has a brand new album out called Until The Next Time, and the good news for his
fans is that it will also be available on DVD and contains no less than 16 tracks. Paddy
also has his own website at www.paddyobrien.com
where you can keep up to date on his career.
Daniel O'Donnell released a new album recently called From Daniel With
Love, and as the title suggests it is a 20 song collection featuring Daniel's greatest
performances about love and romance.Timeless classics such as Wonderful Tonight, Love Me
tender and For The Good Times feature alongside contemporary numbers Wind Beneath My Wings
and You Raise Me Up, which is a song that was first charted by Daniel in 2003 and recently
became a massive UK hit for Westlife. On Sunday march 12, Daniel will be doing a special
charity show for the Iontas Centre in Castleblaney, Co.Monaghan. Billed as Daniel's Tea
Party, by organizer Sr. Celine, the show will be staged at the Glencarn Hotel,
Castleblaney. Ring 042-9753407 for ticket prices etc.
Merle Haggard will receive the 2006 GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award for
lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium, at a ceremony during GRAMMY Week
on Tuesday, February 7th, as well as during the annual GRAMMY Awards on February 8th.
The Country & Irish Entertainment Magazine 2nd Annual Gala Dinner,
Awards and Dance will take place at the Setanta House Hotel, Cellbridge, Co. Kildare on
Monday night Feb. 13th. Co-Hosts for the big night will be Louise Morrissey and Robert
Mizzell, and appearing on the night will be a host of Irish country stars among them,
Brendan Quinn, John Glenn, John Mc Nicholl,Colette, The Indians, The Conquerors, Fhiona
Ennis and many more. A special package consisting of 5 Couse Dinner, Awards Show, Dance,
and B&B is available for the night and full details can be had from the hotel at
01-6271111. Last year's event was a great success and complete sell-out, so if you intend
going you will need to act fast.
Following on the success of his previous single Lay You Down, Eamonn McCann
has come up with another surefire hit with his latest single, Tight Fittin' Jeans. This is
just a forerunner to a new album Eamonn which should be available on the market shortly.
Gary Gamble has plans to release a new album soon and in the meantime he
has released a new single called Night Of The Mardi Gras. Last year Gary achieved one of
his ambitions when he appeared and sang on stage with his hero Daniel O'Donnell, in
Daniel's hometown of Kincasslagh, Co. Donegal. Gary is now building up quite a reputation
for himself on the Irish circuit, and has plans to tour England and Scotland later this
year.
The film biopic on the life of Johnny Cash, "Walk The Line"
will open in cinemas throughout Ireland today, Feb. 2. According to Rosanne Cash, daughter
of Johhny, the film Walk The Line is not an accurate portrayal of what really
happened in her family, adding, "I just don't have a need to see the Hollywood
version of my father's drug addiction and my parents' breakup." Rosanne, 50, is the
daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife Vivian.

Country Star Justin McGurk Back From Nashville
Singer songwriter Justin McGurk from Kildress Co
Tyrone has just returned from his third trip to Nashville in the space of just 12 months.
After an intensive week of meetings with record execs publishers and
songwriters, he is now back in the studio recording new material for his third album.
Twelve months ago Justin visited Nashville for a holiday just to check out the world
famous music city and ever since hes had the bug to make a career out of country
music.
In March of 2005 Justin won first prize with his version of the Colin Raye song Love
Me in the nationwide talent show search for a new country star and as
first prize he got to go back to Nashville in June and represent Ireland in the global
artists show, which took place during the country music festival where he got to perform
his own material. He also performed on the main Riverfront Stage alongside the
worlds top country stars. Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Kenny Rogers also performed
during this, the worlds biggest music festival.
As part of winning the song contest, Aristo Media in Nashville gave him a
publicity contract. This enabled Justins material to be made available to all
record, and major recording producers throughout the United States.
Whilst there this time he was co writing songs with some of the most sought after
Songwriters in the business such as Kris Bergnes whose songs have sold more than 10
million copies for the likes of Tim McGraw. He was also co- writing with Josh Kear who has
had songs recorded by Garth Brooks and who has written the next single for the current
American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.
Working closely with big hitters like these and with a new album on the way, surely
its only a matter of time before Justins material gets some major recognition.
Justin also met up with Keith Urbans management and recording team and they are very
interested in some of his original material. It is hoped that Keith will record at least
one track, which will be included in his upcoming new release.
New album release anticipated for summer 06.
Justin will be touring with Paul Carrick of Mike and the Mechanics this coming March.
Current album Girl Like You and his single Next Century are now
available from various outlets through out Ireland.

Hi everyone,
I hope your new year is off to a great start! It's hard to believe January is almost over.
But I'm excited because hardly a week went by when a SongU.com member didn't write to me
and say that they've just signed a song agreement or been offered a contract or staff
deal, or gotten a hold. Yes, I know that learning to write better songs and improve your
craft isn't as sexy or glamorous as demoing or pitching songs. But it works. And it's cost
effective. There are so many writers who waste thousands of dollars demoing songs that are
poorly written or paying pitch services when their songs aren't ready to pitch, or
investing in a CD project when their songs don't communicate what they intended. So I
thought I'd take a moment to acknowledge some of our members who have started off the year
with a bang. Thank you for showing the world that talent, dedication and education can go
a long way.
Gold Stars
We love it when our members are out there slugging away against the music industry beast
and winning some battles. It's only January, but SongU.com members are rocking and off to
a great start!
* Congrats to Bob D. whose song which began as an assignment in our LYR250 class was
chosen as the Grand Prize winner in the SDSG songwriting contest and Ronnie W. who is a
finalist in the ISC songwriting competition. A big high-five to Lorna Flowers whose song,
"I'm Not Ready Yet" was selected as the song of the month for the Unisong
International Songwriting contest and is currently featured on their homepage at www.unisong.com.
* A big applause to our members who have recently signed single song agreements or staff
writing deals in the past couple of months, including: Dolores S., Rebecca O., Keith J.,
Debbie P. and John C. (whom we paired to write in one of our co-writing challenges). A
toast to Mark E. who is new staffwriter at Hyland Hills Music (making him the third
SongU.com member in the past year to sign a staffwriting deal).
* A standing ovation for Anne M. who received offers for several of her songs from MTV for
use in one of their TV/Network shows.
* High fives to our members who have gotten airplay or had their songs recorded including
Ed W. and Sandra J., whom we paired up for the "Over and Under" challenge and
had their song recently recorded by performing songwriter Melanie Johnson. Rebecca H. and
Bo L. (another pair from the challenge) had their song "Just Like Lou" picked up
by the ALS society (Lou Gehrig's Disease). On a related note, congrats to Paul C. who will
be opening for Jeffrey Steele and who recently completed his debut CD, Homefront (proceeds
benefit "Operation Homefront").
* Knock 'em dead Krystle-Blue whose performance at the recent UrbanFlowcase caught the
ears of Universal Records A&R. Don't forget to cast your vote for Krystle to win at www.urbanflowcase.com/soulsearch.
Krystle also found out this week that she'll be appearing on "Showtime: Live At The
Apollo in February" -- You go girl!
* Take a bow Dale F. and Donna O. Their songs, "Today's your Day" (Dale) and
"You're the World" (Donna) grabbed lots of attention (and some royalties too!)
as their music was debuted at the IMAGING USA national photographers convention in Austin,
TX. Both had signed contracts with The Slideshow Company recently using SongU.com Spin N'
Pitch and are now going to see some royalties in the first part of this year.
