MIDAS RECORDS NASHVILLE
Inks National Distribution Deal With Industry Leader NAVARRE
* * *
Growing Label Will Host Its Debut Event at CRS 37 In Nashville
With Performances By Newly Signed Artists Emerson Drive and Newcomer Lindsey Grant
* * *
Company Will Also Introduce Industry To Its Recently
Completed Regional Radio Promotion Team
Midas Records Nashville, Nashville's newest independent label, is proud to be an integral
part of the Navarre distribution team. The newly formed relationship is a perfect fit, as
members of the Midas team and many Navarre principals have worked together, in various
capacities, over the past two decades.
Bob Freese, VP/GM of Navarre says of the budding partnership, I am excited about the
potential for Midas Records. They set up a first class record company by hiring quality
music executives and signing top talent for their first several releases. Navarre is very
excited about the success weve had in Nashville and with Midas on board its
only going to get better.
Ron Clapper, the multifaceted visionary who founded Midas Records, has teamed up with
Keith Follese and Brad Allen, two of the most creative forces in country music, who will
head the label and spearhead the company's A&R function. Notable industry veterans
will plan and execute the company's marketing, sales, distribution, operations, artist
development, and publicity efforts: Mike Martinovich, Stan Moress, Bob Morrison, Al
Schiltz and Alan Siegel.
Midas Records Nashville's fully staffed radio promotion department is comprised of six
highly seasoned professionals: Bob Reeves (National Director of Promotion), Mary Befera
(Associate Director of Promotion), and regional reps Mike Severson (Southwest), Shari Roth
(Midwest), Clay Henderson (Southeast) and Stacy Nichols (West Coast), who begins her
duties with the label on February 1.
The label has signed veteran hitmaking country band Emerson Drive as its flagship artists.
The group, which released two stellar albums on DreamWorks Records Nashville, is readying
its debut with four producers at the helm: Midas A&R heads Keith Follese and Brad
Allen, along with Alabama's Teddy Gentry and renown producer, Josh Leo. The band's first
single hits radio February 2006 and the debut Midas album is slated for an early summer
release. Keith Follese says the band has found a sound that's "rootsier and
earthier" than their previous work, while remaining "unmistakably Emerson
Drive."
Midas Records Nashville has also signed newcomer Lindsey Grant, who will open for Emerson
Drive at the Midas showcase at the Feb. 2006 Country Radio Seminar. The label also has a
Contemporary Christian Music division, which is launching with Jessie Daniels, a debut
artist who is already garnering a buzz at CCM radio. Additionally, an exciting association
between Midas Records and the Colgate Country Showdown will be announced in the
forthcoming weeks.
Standing L-R: Midas Records Nashville's Bob "Goldfinger" Reeves, Stan Moress,
Brad Allen, Alan Siegel, Mike Martinovich, and Bob Morrison.
Sitting L-R: Midas Records Nashville's Keith Follese and Navarre's VP/GM Bob Freese.

HOW TO PICK YOUR NEXT SINGLE.
What makes a recording a hit?
First, lets just tackle an easier one... What makes a recording good?
Publishers and writers usually say its the song. Lyricists say its the words.
Composers say its the music. The artists say its the vocal performance. The
musicians say its the arrangement. Producers say its the whole package.
I tend to side with the producers, but, being good doesnt guarantee a hit. Sadly,
its not a quality contest.
There are plenty of things along the way that can kill a great record, or make a bad one
popular. Most of these involve money and politics.
For instance, if you are releasing a single next week and an artist who is managed by the
labels vice-president, is also putting out a single the same week, which one do you
think will get the promotion? This was our experience with one of the major labels.
There are less politics in the Indie field, but there are still problems in selecting a
single that will help your career.
Things to consider... Twenty-four hour programming: If the song is too slow, DJs
might not play it in the daytime. They like to keep the audience awake in the morning and
during drive time. If its too fast they may not play it after dark, when listeners
are trying too relax. Medium is the safest tempo, but there are a lot of hits that
dont follow this rule.
A story lyric? A singalong? A novelty? A ballad? And on and on.
Momentum.
If youve had some recent airplay with ballads, do you need a similar follow-up or a
change of pace?
Some DJs like the old time sound, and some like it more modern. No matter which you
choose, somebody wont like it.
Thats okay. You dont need everybody to like it. Just apply some skin
thickener.
Heres how we pick singles.
We listen to all the potential singles we have and narrow it down to a short list, our
criteria being What WE like.
Although weve learned that we cant second-guess the public thats usually
what we try to do next. We analyze tempo, lyric and music content, vocal performance,
etc.. We get discouraged and angry, bang each other on the head, give each other wedgies,
and say we dont care. Then we try again.
When we have it down to two or three, we take a poll of our friends. If we dont like
the poll results, we throw them away.
We listen to the short list over and over until we cant hear it anymore. We try
listening from the next room, from the backyard, from inside the toilet tank.
We finally pick one and send it in to the record company. As soon as the mailbox slams
shut, we start thinking we sent the wrong one.
We begged the record label not to release our biggest hit: Tennessee Birdwalk.
I thought Somewhere in Virginia in the Rain had too many chords for country
music.
Our most popular songs have been fast, slow, funny, serious, and unexpected. We press on
regardless.
I think the only good rule is this: Dont put out anything that is so bad that it
will embarrass you.
When you play it for friends, you dont want to have to cough to cover certain parts.

Ken Overcast
Howdy ,
I hope youre winterin OK. Things are just fine over
this direction. Bobbi Dennis from Moss Point, Mississippi was the name that came to the
top of the pile for our drawing this month. Were sending Bobbi one of our
Montana Cowboy CDs and an autographed copy of Honky Tonk Town by
Montana Historian, Gary A. Wilson.
We just rolled back in home here from a book signing at the MAGGIE event in Great Falls.
The Prairie Star
is a paper that weve been writing for a long time now, and they graciously sponsored
us being there.
Next weekend will be a little busy with a private gig on Friday evening in Bozeman,
another book signing at the Montana Ag Tech Show in Billings and then we have part of the
Sunday morning service at Joliet Baptist Church in Joliet, Montana. Were headed into
North Dakota after that.
The weather has been mild for this northern side of the prairie, and the cattle are doing
great. Weve got one more bunch to work again before they start calving next month.
Dont forget to get your special someone a little treat for Valentines Day. A
book or a CD would be just the thing. There are a ton of new sound samples on our website,
so theres no danger of buying a pig in a poke. Give them a listen at www.kenovercast.com or just call the office toll
free at 1-888-753-7611.Keep
