Indie Bible 2007 - Get Your Music Heard!

_mkoc.jpg (3165 bytes)

July 24, 2005

Hi All,

I tried to send the news out last night but there seemed to be a problem with my news service. At any rate, what's here is all good news so read on and enjoy!

New to MKOC This Week
There's a new song on "Country Sings out for Child Protection" by songwriter, Rhonda Walsh - "Sweet Dreams". I hope to showcase more of Rhonda's work soon. She has some wonderful songs available for artists looking for songs to record.
Sweet Dreams is featured on "Music 4" of the site. For those who've never been to that part of MKCO, take some time and hear some great songs all in the interest of protecting our children. There are many wonderful artists and songs that have been contributed to this cause; Joe Diffie, Little River Band, Ronnie McDowell, Cerrito.. just to name a few.

I gotta tell ya right here about a great deal on a web hosting service. The ad is placed further down in the news, but if y'all are like me, and I'm pretty sure we're all like this.. we skip over the ads to get to the stuff we wanna read. Trust me, you NEED to read this one.
Special Sale! $1.99/mo.!
Just so you'll understand, yes, I need ads to help keep MKOC alive.. I don't get a whole lot out of it, but every little bit helps. But when I'm searching out things to advertise, I choose things that I think some folks would be really interested in AND I seek out the best deals that I can find.... not what will pay more. I have an entire page in the MKOC Store listed with web hosts and if you'll look, you'll see that I try to list a variety with enough info and the prices to help you make an educated choice. But this deal right here, is by far the sweetest one I've come across yet. If someone does sign up for it, please let me know how things go. I'd be willing to report back to all, be it good or bad.. and that goes for any ad you find on MKOC or in the news. If it's a swindle, don't hesitate to let me know.. I'll check it out and if it is indeed a hack, they'll be swiftly removed from everything on MKOC! Truth is, I'm tempted to try this one out myself... just hate packin' up and movin' this gargantuan site! LOL

MKOC Store
Find Books, Music, Videos, Software, Electronics, Website Hosts/Servers .... Don't pay the high prices you find in the stores. I've researched the links posted to give everyone an opportunity to buy great things at the best prices.

Artist Info
Artists, be sure to check out the "Info" section as it's been updated with even more info.. web links, sheet music, instruments and more.

Corban-Hanner.jpg (4768 bytes)It's come to our attention that we forgot to include the time for the concert on Saturday, July 23rd at Horse Trading Days in Zelienople. The show starts at 8:30 PM -- we'll be doing two sets to end around 11:00 PM. It's supposed to be a very nice day and evening weatherwise -- hope to see you there!

And -- we also don't know why, but we are having a bit of a delay updating the schedule on our website. In case you go to the site and don't see the listing for Sunday, July 24th in Kittanning, be assured that the show will go on. The ESPN Junior Bassmaster World Tournament starts on the river during the day and Corbin/Hanner will perform at 6:30 PM. Vanessa Campagna will open the show at 6:00 PM.

One more quick note: we've added another show on Saturday, Sept. 10th -- we'll be on the Majestic again. The show starts at 8:00 PM but the boat sails before that. You can call 412-355-7980 for tickets and info or you can also purchase tickets online at www.gatewayclipper.com -- we'll let you know our August schedule very soon.

Thanks to all of you for your interest in Corbin/Hanner

Sara & Danny at Bluebird Cafe, Nashville

This week's quotes:

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!" - quote submitted on 7/22/05 by SongU.com member, R. Hoskings, GA

"Thanks for challenging me, yet again, to take another step that I never thought I could." - quote submitted on 7/22/05 by SongU.com member, B. Herrema, CO

Hi everyone,

Since many of you will be in Nashville next week for Songposium and we'd like to invite you to:

The Bluebird Cafe, Sunday, July 24th
Sara and Danny are the featured writers. Our half-hour set will start about 9:30pm. Catch us as we do a medley of "firsts" - our first published song, our first song on hold, first cut, etc. Earlier that night will be individual writers doing their own sets (we know that SongU.com members, Melanie Johnson, Jane Godfrey and Frank Jones will be performing that night -- whoo hoo!) .

Our Songposium Seminars
Our 90-minute seminars are:

* Monday, July 25th, 11:00 am "Music Theory Survival Guide For Songwriters" with Danny
* Monday, July 25th, 2:00pm "Five Strategies For Setting and Achieving Your Songwriting Goals" with Sara
* Thursday, July 28th, 2:00pm "Writing From The Heart" with Sara

Several other SongU.com instructors will be participating in Songposium. So be sure to also catch the seminars of Jerry Vandiver/Gracie Hollombe, Pat/Pete Luboff, Nancy Moran and Fett, Kim Copeland and Susan Tucker.

Pamela Phillips Oland: Thanks!
A special thanks to SongU.com faculty member Pamela Phillips Oland for a great and insightful talk this past Thursday night for SONG 181. It was great to hear some of the stories about writing a song for Film/TV as well as watch the song progress from its initial state through its re-writes. Here's just one of the many great comments we got:

"SONG 181: I appreciated that a successful songwriter would present her material so honestly and humbly. Great inspiration for re-writing. I love Digga Digga Dog! My kiddo has the 102 Dalmatians movie; I'm definitely going to dust it off and watch it again (with new ears). :) Terri R!"

Not A Member Yet?
Sign up today and you'll get your first three months of learning, connecting, coaching and pitching for just $50. As a bonus, you'll also receive a licensed version of Virtual Studio Systems Lyricist Software (a $50 value itself). Use redemption code QUARTER when signing up at www.SongU.com

Hope to see you "on campus" sometime soon ;-)

A DJ speaks...
Jack-Misty-DJ-Review.jpg (7927 bytes)
A review by Dan Michel
DJ and Program Director WPMB and WKRV-FM, Vandalia, Illinois

"DON'T IT MAKE YOU WANTA GO HOME", written by JOE SOUTH, has long been one of my favorite songs... With each year that goes by, the lyrics continue to ring true. JACK BLANCHARD and MISTY MORGAN have taken this classic song and have remade it with their familiar harmonies. It features a bouncy arrangement that kind of reminds you of bouncing down a two lane highway... headed for destination: HOME.

This song is due for another go around so that another generation can be reminded of all the things that we give up in the name of progress. This recording by JACK and MISTY is a fresh sounding version of one of the finest songs ever written... perfect for summertime airplay.

Thanks, Dan!

I'm honored that so many stars have recorded or performed my songs, but the ones I'm most proud of are relatively unknown artists.

The names you will probably recognize are: Buck Owens, Englebert Humperdink, Lawrence Welk, Rolfe Harris, Dean Martin and The Golddiggers, Henry Mancini, The Ventures, Wilma Burgess, Des O'Connor, Tony Martin, Connie Eaton, Sheb Wooley, The Tennessee Guitars, The George Wright Orchestra, and Bob Hope, to name a few.

Most of them did a good job. A few just phoned it in.

A couple names that aren't household words are Mike Miller and Joel Mathis. Their renditions of my songs are the best of all.

Joel was a friend from Valdosta Georgia. We lost Joel a few years ago, but his music is still with us.

Mike Miller is our old pal, and former bandleader who lives and plays in Jacksonville, Florida, where he and his band draw big crowds.

Misty and I have no financial interest in either of these artists, but we will keep on trying to get their music out to the world.

If you haven't heard them yet, you're in for a treat.

Mike Miller's rendition of my "Don't It Look Like Georgia" is beautiful.

Joel Mathis' version of my "Little Orphan Annie" is a little gem.

There is untapped talent out there that just gets lost in the crowd.

Some people work to help the needy, others work to better the condition of animals. We admire them. It's just that we care about great artists who have been locked out by that Music Business Stone Wall.

Country Radio Broadcasters
Executive Memo July 21, 2005

By Dave Robbins

WUSN 99.5
WUSN HD2 “Chicago’s Future Country”

The Spring of 2005 will be forever written in the history books of Country Music radio.

The Country format took a giant leap forward in May as Country artists and broadcasters worldwide watched America’s Country Station WUSN Chicago become America’s first commercial radio station to launch a fulltime digital multicast radio station. The new station, WUSN HD2 “Chicago’s Future Country”, features all brand new released country music, and is the most exciting thing on the radio dial today.

This new and all digital Country radio station broadcast covering over 8 million Chicagoland listeners was destined for greatness the moment it was conceived. The format choice and concept were simple: Give Country music fans a radio station that exposes new artists as well as brand new songs from established artists – 24 hours a day. Songs that cannot be heard back to back anywhere else on the dial. It’s new Country music, all the time.

Using HD Radio technology, WUSN HD2 in Chicago is a second broadcast channel to America’s largest and most listened to Country radio station, US99.5. Both stations can coexist on one frequency thanks to digital transmission. Listeners who are listening to US99.5 with a digital radio now have a choice: Listen to the main channel, or select HD2 with the push of a button and hear all new Country music, all the time - without ever leaving 99.5 FM. All for free in crystal clear CD quality.

True Country music fans will love this format. It is unique, different, and most importantly promotes Country music for the future. There is nothing as powerful as launching a radio station that will impact future generations of Country music listeners, and actively promote the new music in the format. No other format has anything like WUSN HD2 to support its future growth.

This is a radio station that Country artists and Nashville alike can be proud of, providing airplay for artists and songs and building the foundation for the future stars of Country. By exposing new product on a continuous basis, we open a direct line of communication to the trendsetters, the actives, the true lovers of Country music. We expose the new and fresh product and create an excitement about new Country music that has never been created before.

As HD capable radios begin showing up in cars this fall and tabletop models begin appearing in stores for Christmas 2005, guess what will be on the digital dial and leading the way? WUSN HD2 broadcasting all new Country music, all the time.

As we leap into future technologies, the Country music industry should be proud. Proud of its talent. Proud of its heritage. Proud of its stellar music. And now, proud of a new and futuristic all digital radio station leading the way in America’s heartland showcasing the future of Country music.

Country music listeners will be able to download and purchase songs right in their car, get additional artist information, and download lyrics, all at the push of a button as digital capabilities are added to HD radios.

The winner of course is the format, the artist, the music retailers just to name a few. But the most important winner is the one who will determine the future success of Country music radio: The Country music fan. We all know them, and we all love them.

Thank you for all of the support we have received in the launch of this fantastic project. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Emergency Numbers For Cell Phones

(Courtesy of Bob Cape)

This sounds like excellent advise and I am doing it now on my cell phone. I found the information in a very interesting daily newsletter put out by Kimberly Quiggle. Check it out SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER in the subject line to cupocheer@sc.rr.com
Bob C

A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact number in their mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (i.e. In Case of Emergency), has rapidly spread throughout the world as a particular consequence of last week's terrorist attacks in London. Originally established as a nation-wide campaign in the UK, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a designated relative / next-of-kin in an emergency situation.

The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic Bob Brotchie and was launched in May this year. Bob, 41, who has been a paramedic for 13 years, said: "I was reflecting on some of the calls I've attended at the roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured person.

Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ICE we'd know immediately who to contact and what number to ring. The person may even know of their medical history." By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile will help the rescue services quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be vital in a life or death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and it could easily help save your life. Why not put ICE in your phone now? Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word 'ICE' and the number of the person you wish to be contacted.

Further reading from another email. Subject: ICE Following the disaster in London . . East Anglican Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word "I C E" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also email this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc."
