Country Radio Broadcasters
Executive Memo July 14, 2005The Radio Talent
Crisis
By Phyllis Stark
Nashville Bureau Chief
Billboard Information Group
A poll of country radio programmers conducted by Billboard Radio Monitor at the close of
2004 revealed that the issue of talent recruitment and retention was one of their top
three concerns. (The others were a lack of budget for marketing and promotions at many
stations and high spot loads.)
Many programmers say there is a lack of qualified applicants now because years of
voicetracking have finally resulted in a very shallow talent pool.

Jack Blanchard & Misty MorganListen to a Jack & Misty Song Clip While You Read...
It Seems Like There Ain't No
Goin' Home

THE LIFE OF AN INDIE SINGLE.
Some people will disagree with this.I'm used to it. There are many opinions on how long to
wait before releasing the next single.
Singles had a three or four month run in the old days, and maybe they still do on the
majors.
With indies, there are a gazillion records out there vying for the DJ's attention. There
is actually too much product being shipped. This is because anybody with the money can get
on some indie compilation somewhere.
I think a single in the indie market is good for 6 to 8 weeks tops. Stardust, the label
Misty and I are on, puts out a comp every second month. I think this is a good policy.
Although, on the majors we got 3 to 4 months out of a single, our song "It Seems Like
There Ain't No Goin' Home" hit #1 in the Indie field, and burned out after about six
weeks.
There is a huge pile of new stuff on the DJ's desk, waiting to be heard, and a limited
amount of air time. Musical attention spans are shorter because of the sheer volume of
material being mailed out every day.
I think if we wait the traditional three months, thinking we might step on our previous
release, we will find ourselves off the charts, and out of the running for several weeks,
losing our momentum.
Of course, there will be exceptions. I hate exceptions. They make me look bad.
Jack Blanchard.

HOW YOU CAN TELL WHEN I'M HAPPY.
How can you tell when I'm happy? The air conditioning is working and the monkeys are not
after me.
(Just kidding about the monkeys. They went away when I quit drinking.).
I was raised in a cold climate and I'm stranded here in this tropical swampland.
We have another home now, since last years storms blew the old one across the state line.
The air conditioning actually works here, and that's the best part of Florida living.
The hurricanes are lining up across the Atlantic for their annual target practice, and I
just ran across this article I wrote a year ago when we were still in our doomed ex-home.
***
A SALUTE TO VIRGINIA CITY.
Our air conditioner is temperature challenged. Its cool in the kitchen and hot as a
mink back here in the studio. I have to take a shower every damn day.
We called the repair gnome and hes coming here Wednesday. In the meantime, Misty put
a big floor fan in the kitchen doorway to blow some cool air back here to me, hoping to
prevent me from going naked in front of the dog.
Everything is damp. My finger gets stuck to the exclamation point key!!!!!!!! I just felt
a rare and beautiful gust of cold air. and asked Misty what happened. She told me she had
opened the refrigerator door to get some milk. I thought Id died and gone to Poland!
Its eighty degrees and humid at 3 AM here in Central Florida, and the hurricane
fright season is starting.
Its thirty degrees cool in Virginia City NV tonight.
To my friends in Virginia City:.. Bite me!

A Blast From the Past
BUSTER DOSS (1949.)
In 1948 & 1949 BUSTER DOSS & his band, the "ARKANSAS
PLAYBOYS:" recorded 6 songs for the STAR TALENT Record company of Dallas Texas in Jim
Beck Studios in Dallas, the same studio that LEFTY FRIZZELL recorded his first hit
"If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time" and many other great artists got
their start there. All six songs were released as single records and got great airplay!
The songs were
"PLAYBOY BOOGIE'
"GRAVEYARD BOOGIE"
"SHE'S MY ARKIE"
"LET'S GO FISHING"
"RETURNED SOLDIER'S GRAVE"
"WEDDING BELLS" (Later covered by Hank Williams)
A little side note, when ELVIS first joined the "Louisiana Hayride" he told me
that he really enjoyed my 'Boogie' songs. Which we were doing years before it was called
"RockaBilly!
I lost all copies of the 3 78 RPM records in a fire and a good friend from Arkansas found
one of them at a flea market and sent it to me which I really treasured very much! Then
recently, I got an email from Al L TURNER in the UK that he had all three records in his
collection and would put them on a CD and send them to me.
AND THEY CAME IN TODAY'S MAIL!! THANKS AL FOR THE MEMORIES!! IT'S A SMALL WORLD!!

Country Cuts with Roger Ryan
In a concert that lasted over two hours Dwight Yoakam had his adoring fans in raptures all
through the show at the Marquee in Cork last week. The crowd was on it's feet long before
the final number and when that came, and he left the stage, he had to return for an encore
which lasted another 15 minutes. He apologized for the fact that he hadn't visited Ireland
as often as would have liked to and promised his fans that he would certainly return more
often in the future.
People traveled from all over Ireland to attend his only concert here, and from the
reception he received I have no doubt he will return again.
The opening act BR549 went down a treat but their time on stage, a mere 30 minutes, was
way too short.A band of their calibre certainly deserved more time than that.
The 15th Annual Athy Bluegrass Music Festival or Athy in July as it is now affectionately
known among bluegrass fans, took place this year from July 14th-July 17th.
A fantastic line up of bands performed over the w/end with Valerie Smith & Liberty
Pike (USA) who are taking the US bluegrass scene by storm the headline band. Other acts
included Potomac Crossing (USA) Gary Ferguson & Gail Wade (USA) Carmel & The
Ravens (Westmeath) Acoustic Grass (Derry) Kevin & Geraldine Gill (Cork) Prison Love
(Dublin) and Athys own Woodbine.
Brendan Quinn.
Brendan Quinn was born In the small market town of Magherafelt in South Derry Ireland. One
of fourteen children, his father was the local blacksmith. Growing up in the Fifties was
an exiting time, with the emergence of Rock n Roll and artists such as Elvis, Jerry
Lee and Fats Domino dominating the charts at the time.
The young Brendan got the bug early, influenced by his older sister Philomena who sang
with The Malachy Doris Band. He would listen to Philomena singing all the hit songs of the
day around the house.
I used to sing in bed and when I was about ten I can remember my mother shouting up
the stairs to me to stop singing and go to sleep, says Brendan.
Local musician Sean McKee had a skiffle group at the time complete with washboard, tea
chest bass and of course a couple of guitars. Sean showed Brendan a few basic and told him
if he learned to play the guitar then he could be in the group. So, instead of spending
the long winter nights playing snooker or going to the Pictures he sat in the
house strumming his way through such ditties as Rock Island Line and Thats Alright
Mama.
Leaving school at fifteen with no education certificates, Brendan went to work with his
father in the blacksmiths shop learning how to shoe horses and hoop cartwheels.
Things didnt quite work out and after a year or so he left the blacksmiths
shop to take an apprenticeship as a welder in a local builders yard.
All this time Brendan was honing his skills as a guitarist/singer in a local showband
called Robin And The Breakaways, playing local ballrooms, Orange and parish halls. He
would often get back from a gig at six or seven in the morning and go straight to work.
In The summer of 1967, at the height of the flower power thing, Brendan and the rest of
the Breakaways decided to hit the road as full time professionals.
It was fantastic, we didnt have to go to work any more. We would be getting
Home from a gig at all hours and we would see all our mates standing on the corner with
their lunch boxes under their arms waiting for the lorry to take them to work and we were
going home to a nice warm bed says Brendan.
When Lead singer Robin decided to immigrate to Canada it fell to Brendan to fill his shoes
as well as playing guitar. It was at this stage that Brendan made his first recording.
With the assistance of another young guitarist. Arty McGlynn,
The Breakaways took the long trip to Dublins Trend Studios and recorded four songs
which led to the release of Brendans first single, the Kris Kristofferson classic
Help Me Make Through the Night, which was released on the new Velvet label.
In 1971 Brendan recorded the Jerry Chessnut song Its Four in the Morning',
which became major hit and made him a household name in Ireland. His follow up single,
Behind Closed Doors was played listed on Tony Blackburns Radio one
morning show. It was actually played every day for a month but just failed to make it into
the British charts. The song however went to number five in Ireland.
By 1975 Brendan had formed a new country band The Bluebirds and they went on to great
acclaim recording four albums together for the Emerald label in Belfast and performing one
night stands, TV shows and representing Ireland at the prestigious CMA Fan Fare in
Nashville.
In 1980 while performing at the Wembley Country Music Festival Brendan met up with the
famous Jim Halsey who booked a lot of Americas top country acts such as Don
Williams, George Jones and Tammy Wynette and Kenny Rogers. The result of this meeting was
two major tours of the States culminating with a spot on the syndicated coast to coast TV
show HEE-HAW. In one memorable night in Tulsa Brendan and the boys had an impromptu jam
session with the great Merle Haggard. Brendan recalls, We did this show that Haggard
was headlining and after the gig Merle invited us back to his suite at the hotel and we
sang and played Irish and country songs till the dawn. I can still see Hag crossed leg on
the bedroom floor pickin out the blues and calling to me to sing Danny Boy.
These trips made a lasting impression on Brendan and by 1981 he had moved his whole Family
to Vancouver Canada when he and the band were booked for an eight-week stint at the famous
Blarney Stone club in the citys Gastown.
We went to Vancouver for eight weeks and ended up staying four years, says
Brendan. We got so many offers to play here and there so we ended up playing all
over Western Canada and the North-western USA. We played a festival in the Northwest
Territories in town called Watson Lake and as we drove into town, we were so far North
there was this big sign saying, 'Welcome to Watson Lake' and a huge arrow pointing South
to Alaska and it was In the winter and about forty below but all in all we loved
Vancouver'.
1985 saw Brendan and his family back in Magherafelt and picking up his career again. This
was enhanced when the late Harry Adair asked him to present a new TV show for BBC. Make
Mine Country ran for two seasons and was a huge success , putting Brendan firmly back in
the limelight.
In the early 90s Brendan decided after 25 years on the road to stop touring .
He disbanded The Bluebirds and formed a new band with his old friend Arty McGlynn. The
Kickin Mule is a bunch of musicians who get together from time to time to play the
kind of music they like themselves. They dont rehearse and just play for fun. In the recent past Brendan has got together with his two sons
Stephen and James and they play as the Brendan Quinn Family Band and is really enjoying
himself. Heres to another thirty years of great music from The Mighty Quinn.
George Hamilton
IV
George Hamilton IV and Barry & Holly Tashian were
neighbours for quite a long time in Nashville. While George was doing his own thing and
touring the world, Barry & Holly were members of the Emmylou Harris band for eight
years before embarking on a career of their own. The former neighbours are now uniting for
their first ever tour together, and the good news is, it will take place in Ireland in
August. George of course has performed in Ireland on many occasions both as a solo artist
and together with Sandy Kelly.

(Barry & Holly Tashian)
Barry & Holly Tashian on the other hand paid their first visit to Ireland last year,
and one of the venues they played was the Village Arts Centre in Kilworth. They were so
delighted with the response to their music that they decided to come back for a longer
tour this year and they are delighted that their old friend and former neighbour George
Hamilton IV will be accompanying them. They will play several dates in Northern Ireland
before moving South for three shows. The venues are the Rockies Pavilion in Blackrock on
Saturday August 20th, Colfers, Carrig-On-Bannow, Co.Wexford on Sunday August 21st and back
again to Cork for a return visit to the Village Arts centre in Kilworth on Monday August
22nd.

Erin HayMidnight At The Old
Soldiers' Home
It seems that the new
song "Midnight At The Old Soldiers Home" written by Erin Hay and Lonnie Ratliff
for Erin's next CD "Blue Country Song" although less than 48 Hrs old is not the
best kept secret in town that they planned for it to be. We were only going to play it a
couple of times for a couple of people but someone told someone else about it and they
told someone else and now it looks like we are not going to be able to put that Jeannie
back in the bottle so we just uploaded it to SoundClick as just a
Guitar/Vocal, which is all we have at this time and that way we don't have to send out
anymore mp3 files. You can just go there and listen to it or download the Guitar/Vocal
Demo. We have only written about a half dozen songs together but we feel real good about
this one and would really appreciate your feedback. Just listen and then send us an E
Mail.
