We toured the country that year on the strength of three hits: Tennessee Bird Walk", "Humphrey the Camel", and "You've Got Your Troubles (I've Got Mine)". We had lots of fun on the road with Merle Haggard, George and Tammy, Don Gibson, Archie Campbell, Grandpa Jones, Roy Clark, Waylon Jennings, Tom T. Hall, Ray Stevens, and so many other friendly artists and fans. Who could ask for more? There's no business like Country Music! We have met most of the Country legends, and have split shows with a lot of them, but we never met Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Yet, we have always felt that we know them. I think millions of us have that feeling. There is a certain rare something special people have that makes us feel that way. Like friends. These are people you pray for even though you’ve never met them. We saw them in live performance at a convention in Nashville in the 1970’s. They made us laugh and cry. Johnny is the most charismatic entertainer we’ve ever seen. June, with her angelic aura, made us just know that if we met her she would be nice to us. These people would help you if you asked. That’s the unspoken message we got in their presence. Misty and I like to think we’re a little like them. Why not? That’s a good thing to be. We are happiest when we’re onstage making an audience comfortable, and emotionally involved. We’re still in love after all these years. INDIE MUSIC: A CAREER OR AN EXPENSIVE HOBBY? I recently mentioned an upcoming indie event to a friend of mine who is in the music business. He laughed, and said this: “Those people are busy”. I said: “Hey, I’m one of "those" people!” But, is he right? Are we just spinning our wheels, creating a fantasy world of pretend charts and awards, without making a nickel, just to satisfy some need to be popular? Maybe a little of that, but I think it's more. What do we get out of it? For one thing, we get to test ourselves and our music. The results may not always be accurate, because often the most creative artists are the least accepted. But it's an arena to try out our stuff. As a bonus, Misty and I have made new friends through our involvement in Indie music. I’m not talking about just acquaintances, but friends who would help you in a pinch. We’re selling some CD’s over the internet. Any profits will probably go to make more music. But, the main thing is this: Our music is being heard and that’s important to us. Today good artists are locked out of the major markets by powerful corporate interests. Indie music gives us a chance to leave our mark. To the money changers who rule the record business it’s the bottom line. Buy a round piece of plastic for a dime and sell it for $17. Who cares what’s on it? We care what’s on it. It’s our art. We make music because it's what we're good at. Our heart is in it, we're hooked on it, and the Indie scene is the place to be until picked up by a major label, or until the big comeback in the sky. Life is richer because of music whether it's played by a symphony orchestra, or two friends working out guitar chords on the porch. I've seen the old folks in rest homes sing along with the slides, smiling for a little while in an otherwise dreary or painful day. TROY COOK Jr ON THE UP (As reported in Stuart Cameron's HotDisc Newsletter -  www.hotdisc.net - country@hotdisc.net) So many people in country music believe that American teenager Troy Cook Jr is the best Independent act in the world at the moment. So many comments come in about this young man and nearly all say the same - just why hasn't he got a major record deal yet? The quality of his music and his performances on stage are right up there with the best and it will be no surprise at all if one of the big guns line him up for bigger things. He is looked after well by manager Colonel Buster Doss, who produces his music, and he's currently recording a new album with Buster which should be out soon. It includes a duet with another top indie act Erin Hay. In the meantime Troy has just enjoyed opening for the Kentucky Headhunters at a gig in Arkansas. Reports suggest that Troy and his Long Haul Band hit it off well with the Kentucky boys and now they move on to support and play with Eddy Raven. There's a lot of British promoters out there who could do worse than to sign the lad up for a British tour. He is just the kind of act who, I believe, with the right marketing, could become a huge star in the UK. Americana International promoter Chris Jackson has been a big supporter of fresh talent from both sides of the atlantic, and has been responsible for showcasing some fabulous talent at his massive outdoor festival each July. He need look no further for a quality act for 2006. What about it Chris? It could be the start of something big for Troy over here in the UK!
