Doug Dugger
Chaplain of Country MusicI'm very sorry
to have to pass along the sad news that Doug Dugger passed away. I received the following
news from Frank Dell, president of the Country
Legends Association (CLA) and very good friend of Doug's. I'd also like to point out
that Doug was very active in CLA.
"I learned the news on Doug's passing yesterday from
his family and friend. I called for him yesterday as I would talk to him often, the last
time was a couple weeks ago. He was having a rough time."
Doug will be missed by many... those within the music biz
as well as fans.
Go rest high on that Mountain, Doug... We'll all be together by and by.

Billy Dean
Billy Dean: Country Music's Hottest Devoted DadGrammy winning Country Music Star Sings About
The Joys of Fatherhood On Top #10 single
Let Them Be Little, The Title Track
From New Curb Album
* * *
Acclaimed Singer/Songwriter Currently On The Guys
Night Out Tour with Craig Morgan
True to the heartfelt lyrics of the hit title track on his hot new Curb
Records release Let Them Be Little, Billy Dean will have a lot to celebrate when
Fathers Day rolls around June 19. In May, he married Stephanie, his great love of
five years, who has been a wonderful stepmom to his children, Eli (age 12) and Hannah (age
10). The singer/songwriter wrote the tunewhich recently hit #8 on the Billboard Hot
Country Singles Chartas a reflection of his love for his kids and the challenges he
faced being a single dad for many years. Its a song that continues to resonate with
both single and married fathers the world over.
The inspiration behind This Is The Life, Let Them Be Littles second
scheduled single, perfectly sums up his current optimism about his new family and, of
course, his suddenly hot again career. Last year, after several years without a record
deal, the Grammy winner took a grass roots plunge back onto the charts with a
self-released version of Thank God Im a Country Boy, rekindling the
industrys interest and leading to a new deal with Curb.
I woke up one day, looked over at Stephanie who I love, thought about Eli and Hannah
and how well we were doing since my divorce, and about my small house in this little
neighborhood of Nashville, he says. Its so different from when I lived
on the proverbial Ponderosa, but that was okay. Suddenly, I realized, its just great
to be here. This is the life and I love it. Ive arrived.
The 64 hitmaker is loving the fact that both kids are clearly following in his
musical footsteps. Hannah sings and plays guitar, while Eli has been learning studio
engineering while also playing electric guitar. As he teaches them the ropes of making and
recording music, Dean has also come a long way on the domestic front. When he first got
divorced eight years ago, he asked longtime nanny Willie to step aside so he could be more
hands on.
I acted all confident, but when the kids got sick, I wasnt sure I could take
care of them, Dean recalls. I mean, they saw me as a great playmate, but
dealing with the nasty stuff like the flu? It sucked at first. I gave Eli too much of this
one medication and he threw up all over the place. They still remember that. But its
going great now. I say theres two choices--you can have an awesome career and screw
up your kids, or you can have your kids love and respect you even if you dont make a
dime.
The success of Let Them Be Little finds Dean enjoying the best of both worlds, with the
title tracka tune he originally wrote with Lonestars Richie McDonald for that
bands album Lets Be Us Againperfectly reflecting what hes learned
as a father over the years.
"That was the key thing," Dean says.
"Ive always had this big kid at heart thing going on with tunes like
Billy The Kid and Young Man, but then I had to grow up. Part of
the process involved the kids parenting me. Like, if I was fighting with my ex-wife, my
little girl would go, 'Well, why don't you just not fight?' And I'm like, 'Uh
yeah!
Why do I get suckered into fighting like this?' These kinds of things made me listen to my
kids in a new way. That's where that line comes from in 'Let Them Be Little': 'And now
you're teaching me how only a child can see.' Im really having the time of my life
with them now, and theyre excited that dads back playing and singing
again.
Putting his money where his lyrics are, hes already back on the road, co-headlining
with Craig Morgan as The Guys Night Out Tour, which will pick up steam this
summer. Deans looking at three TV pilots, is writing music for a new musical based
on the writings of Yankee Jones, The Briefcase Poet, and has big plans to stop
at numerous Tower Records and Wal-marts throughout the U.S. in support of Let Them Be
Little.
While his early career was highlighted with major hit ballads, Let Them Be Little,
appropriately enough, finds Dean cutting loose and tearing it up with more raw energy than
ever before. The best part of coming back is doing it on my own terms, against the
normal plans of the music business. My voice is better than ever, too. If I only get one
moment back in the spotlight, Im proud of being able to share my story, my great
love of life and the investment Ive made in my kids.

Buglers Scarce for Veterans' Funerals
If you know of anyone who can play a horn,
please let them know about,
www.buglesacrossamerica.org or www.echotaps.org

Blake Maxson of Shinglehouse, Pa., plays taps on a bugle in Savona, N.Y. as part of the 41
mile...
Buglers Scarce for Veterans' Funerals
Saturday, May 21, 2005 7:05 PM EDT
The Associated Press
By BEN DOBBIN
It began with three haunting notes from a teenage girl. A second bugler, about 100 yards
down the road, picked up the tune. And then a third.
More than 850 buglers, trumpeters and other horn players fanned out Saturday along 41
miles of roads in rural western New York and performed a cascading rendition of taps to
highlight the scarcity of buglers at veterans' funerals.
The 24-note melody started up at Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, overlapped from one
instrument to the next as it reverberated through a string of small towns from Painted
Post to Campbell to Savona, and closed out nearly three hours later at Bath National
Cemetery.
The Armed Forces Day tribute, dubbed Echo Taps, took in at least 866 musicians from 30
states playing all varieties of brass horns, from trombones and tubas to flugelhorns and
valveless bugles.
"This is just a way of paying tribute to our veterans and hopefully bringing more
buglers into the fold," said organizer Les Hampton, a Corning Inc. engineer who
served on a Navy destroyer in the Vietnam War. "If there's a selfish reason for doing
this, I just hope that when my time comes that I have a live bugler."
Thousands of spectators lined the winding route, standing at rapt attention as the music
came through. Some put their hands to their hearts, others dabbed at tears or saluted.
The dramatic musical tableau started with 15-year-old Hannah Sollecito, a descendant of
Union Army Gen. Daniel Butterfield, who was credited with composing taps along with his
brigade bugler, Oliver Norton, during the Civil War.
Sollecito, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., said being chosen to play first was overwhelming.
"I could barely talk when they asked me, and then I started crying," she said.
Each musician, often separated by less than a hundred yards, performed a full rendition.
The song rolled through the Chemung River Valley to Corning, before tilting northwest
toward Bath, at about 20 miles an hour.
The final haunting chords were delivered by Fran Look, 80, a World War II paratrooper who
performs taps at about a dozen funerals each year, and George Taylor, 74, a Korean War
intelligence specialist who has played at almost 10,000 funerals since 1945.
"I belong to two honor guards and we do funerals almost daily," said Taylor, of
Newark, Del. "We had three buglers and two of them died and it's down to me."
"So many people find it more comforting when you play taps," he added.
"They wouldn't settle for anything less. Taps is a `Thank you' to the veteran."
An average of 1,800 U.S. veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam die per day. There
are not nearly enough buglers to perform live renditions at military funerals.
Taps is usually delivered digitally, using either a compact disc player placed near the
grave or, increasingly since 2003, a Pentagon-approved, push-button "ceremonial
bugle" that anyone can mimic playing by raising it to their lips.
The armed forces have about 500 musicians who perform taps, but many of them have been
dispatched to Iraq and Afghanistan. About 3,800 civilian volunteers in the four-year-old
Bugles Across America group also fill in wherever they can.
The Echo Taps project aims to honor military service, enlist more volunteer buglers and
raise the profile of America's 120 national cemeteries. Organizers hope to get a mention
in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest line of brass instruments playing the same
tune.
After Saturday's elongated performance, the entire symphony assembled on a parade field at
a Veterans Administration's medical center here to play taps one more time together.
Gail Rodriguez snapped photographs to send to her son, Jesse, a Marine sergeant serving in
Afghanistan.
"He thought it was an awesome thing for them to be doing," she said, standing
next to his young son, Trevor.
Rodriguez prays every day that God will keep her son safe. "That's the only way you
can cope," she said.

To the Editor:
I would like to offer an observation concerning Memorial Day and its
significance. Too many of our younger generation dont understand, or havent
been taught, the meaning behind this holiday. Some of our older population seem no longer
to remember or care.
I was not born in this country, but this day holds a special meaning to me. Memorial Day
is a day of remembrance for those in uniform who have fallen in service to America. A day
to remember those who passed in harms way, and gave all for our freedom.
I was born in The Philippines, the next to youngest daughter of Amado Palomaria, Sr. In
his later years, he was a local politician and a well-respected man. His younger years
molded the man he was to become.
He married young and had two children. He returned home one day after an attack by
Japanese aircraft to find his home destroyed and his wife and two babies killed by a
Japanese bomb. My father became a guerrilla fighter. He fought, ate and slept beside the
American soldiers who were fighting the common enemy. He fought bravely, and felt honored
by the Americans when he was presented a helmet to wear in battle, even though some
soldier had to die for him to receive it. He still had the helmet, and it was one of his
most prized possessions, at his death.
After the war, he remarried, and the union produced eleven children. In each one of us he
instilled his respect and admiration for the American soldier. Many Americans died so my
country could have its freedom. The Bataan Death March should never be forgotten, but ask
your children about it, and they wont have an answer.
Through out the history of this country, when duty called, young men lay down their plow
lines, left the factories, the office work, the construction jobs, and answered the call.
Too many were left lifeless on the battlefield, many in my own country.
Because of the American Soldier, my country experienced freedom. A freedom that allowed a
young girl to leave a small village in The Philippines and come to America and enjoy a
career in music.
One of the proudest moments in my life was on December 14, 2000, when I stood before Judge
Henry Poliz, in Shreveport, Louisiana, raised my right hand, took the oath and became an
American citizen.
Memorial Day is my day. My day of respect for those who have died preserving freedom in
both my old country, and my new country. God bless every man and woman who dons the
uniform and fights the brave fight. Without those whom we gather to remember on Memorial
Day, we wouldnt have a country. God bless you, G.I. Joe.
Sincerely,
DRamirez

Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan

DON'T GET ME STARTED ABOUT LIFE.
I have some friends who send me deep stuff. Occasionally I get one that stops my brain in
its tracks. I have to figure out whether I agree or not, and get my thoughts down on a
page, and out of my head.
This came from Nancy:
"Every man is where he is by the law of his being; the thoughts which he has built
into his character have brought him there, and in the arrangement of his life there is no
element of chance, but all is the result of a law which cannot err. This is just as true
of those who feel 'out of harmony' with their surroundings as of those who are contented
with them."
...THE DAILY GURU.
* * *
My response:
It's comforting to think that if we are good, good things will happen, and maybe the very
act of thinking that
has a positive physical influence.
I've read all the positive thinking books, so why isn't my life in better shape?
Mark Twain believed that we never have even one choice in our lives... that each decision
is the only possible one, based upon external circumstances, combined with our past
experiences. No decision can be wrong or right, so there is no resulting glory or guilt.
I believe there are other factors:
Chaos, for one.
Accidents will PROBABLY happen.
From a different angle:
Some of us walk the fine line between conformity and nonconformity, between making our own
decisions and making the popular ones.
Sometimes by choosing the high road, we find ourselves with very few fellow travelers, and
with little help available.
Time is also a contributor. Time has a direction. It flows from order to disorder. Where
you happen to be along the time line is part of the mix.
Environment is another thing to look at... The situation you happen to be born into, or
stuck in, helps to shape your character.
I also have a feeling that what goes around might not come back. I've spent a lot of time
waiting for bad people to get their medicine. I'm still waiting.
I guess it's impossible to evaluate my life while I'm still in it. I think it will be up
to somebody else.
It might be better than I think.
Jack Blanchard

PETE SCHLEGEL RELEASES A GIRL LIKE YOU
Country music
artist Pete Schlegel has released a new single from his Strong Stuff CD titled "A
Girl Like You". A Girl Like You was written by Ron Harbin, Aaron Baker,
and Anthony Smith. It can be found on Mark Trail Music compilation #11.
Pete Schlegel has had a handful of national U.S. releases. He was chosen by Great American
Country as the Hot Pick artist for November and December 2004 with the video
for his third single, "It Takes A Whole Lotta Liquor To Like Her. Liquor
to Like Her has also been receiving airplay on VH1 Country.
Pete Schlegels music isnt easily tagged, but a guitar-driven, up-tempo,
honky-tonk sound describes it best. Reminiscent of his inspirations, Ernest Tubb, George
Jones, and Brooks & Dunn, Schlegels sound is timeless. Schlegels vocals
are delivered just the way theyre written: genuinely. No pretension or glossy
over-production, just the range of human emotions and experience of one man.
Pete Schlegel will be hitting the road this summer on his Pour Me One Tour.
The tour will hit cities across the Midwest in support of his new single, A Girl
Like You, from his current CD Strong Stuff. He can also be found at various events
and booths at the CMA Music Fest in Nashville.

New Compilation Album From Brendan Quinn
Deep Cove Records are delighted to announce the release of
a new compilation CD from one of Irelands best country singers Brendan Quinn.
Country And Irish is a compilation of Brendans best known songs and some
that have never been released before, all digitally remastered and packaged in a four page
booklet giving an account of Brendans thirty five career in the music business.
As you may know, Brendan is now back on the road playing guitar with his son James and is
really enjoying life. When James decided to pursue a career as a country singer, he
asked me if Id play with him and show him the ropes so to speak, and it just began
to snowball. I began to meet people who danced to the Bluebirds all those years ago, and
to be honest Ive got a new lease of life and Im really enjoying myself
said Brendan.
THOMAS AND FHIONA GET IT TOGETHER
A brand new duetting partnership has evolved on the Irish Country Music Scene. Co
Fermanaghs Thomas Maguire and Wexford lass Fhiona Ennis have now teamed up on stage
after the huge success of their first duet Promised To John.
After appearing as a special guest on Thomas band for the last two months to promote
their single, Fhiona has now joined Thomas band as a permanent fixture.
Fhiona Ennis has enjoyed great success since her debut release Lovin You, Lovin
Me and follow up We All Get Lucky Sometimes. She certainly struck it
lucky with the opportunity to tour with USA singer/songwriter legend Leona Williams last
year and more recently with Moe Bandy.
Leona Williams, Merle Haggards former wife and duetting partner has in fact invited
Fhiona to perform with her in Nashville in June of this year at the annual C.M.A festival.
Thomas Maguire is now in his fifth year of fronting his own band and along the way has
picked up numerous awards for his efforts and graced our television screens on four
occasions. Thomas cut his teeth on the London entertainment scene before returning to
Ireland in 2000 after being voted Best Act on the London Circuit at The Irish World
Awards. Under the management of Henry Mc Mahon, Thomas has recorded songs which have
identified his own unique vocal style, Leona, Kelly Ann & Take Me Home Johnny to name
a few. He is set to release his third album very shortly.
With the coming together of Fhiona Ennis and Thomas Maguire now on stage, a great nights
entertainment is assured at their live shows
Leona Williams.
The long awaited return visit from Leona williams will take place in September. Following
her first tour last year Leona promised that she would return soon again, and true to her
word she has arranged to be in Ireland from Sept 24 to Oct 4. This time 'round she is also
bringing her son Ron Williams who is a singer in his own right, and the Barry Doyle Band
will accompany her on all dates.
The tour kicks off at the T.F.Royal in Castlebar on Sept 24th, and other dates already
confirmed are,
Royal Hotel, Roscommon, on Sept 25th; Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny, on Sept 27th; Drummond
Hotel, Derry, on Set 29th; Mellon Country Hotel, Omagh, on Sept 30th; Great Northern
Hotel, Bundoran, on Oct 2nd and Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan on Oct 4th.
Leona Williams has the unique distinction of being the only female artist to have recorded
an album in a prison, a feat she achieved in San Quentin, with the backing of none other
than Merle Haggard's band, The Strangers. The album is called "San Quentin's First
Lady" and I have no doubt it will be on sale during her tour here. Of course the
Merle haggard connection doesn't just end with his band because Leona was in fact married
to the Hag for 8 years, and not only toured with him but also recorded a duet album with
him.
The album, released on Mercury Records in 1983 ( 812183-1) is called Heart to Heart, but
I'm not sure if it's still available.
Leona has recorded quite a few solo albums as well, and throughout her career has picked
up quite a few awards such as Induction into the Iowa, Texas, and Missouiri Country Music
Hall of Fame. She has also received the prestigious George D.Hay Award in Nashville and
the Texas Living Legend Award in 2004.
Leona is also an accomplished songwriter and has songs recorded by Merle Haggard, and our
own Daniel O'Donnell.
If the response to her tour last year is anything to go by, then this next visit by Leona
should be a sell out.
Ros FM.
Congratulations to Mary Larkin and her hard working team in Ros FM, the new Community
Radio Station which broadcasts on 94.6 in and around Roscommon Town. The station was
acknowledged for promoting country music when Moe Bandy and his band visited the studio
and performeda live set during his tour earlier this year. Country DJs at the station are
Adrian Martin Murphy, Jimmy Fallon and Kieran Mc Dermott, who between them offer the
listeners a wide variety of country music styles.

James Kilbane.
James Kilbane is a man with a mission. That mission is to establish himself as one of the
leading entertainers on the Irish music scene, and he is certainly going the right way
about it.
In the short time that he been on the scene he has gone from strength to strength and is
now drawing huge crowds to each of his gigs throughout the country.
James was born in London in 1970, returning to Achill Island , Ireland, with his parents
where he now resides with his wife, Christina, and teenage children ,daughter Diana and
son Daniel.
I caught up with James recently in Salou, Spain, where he was performing as one of the
stars of the first Irish Country Music and Dancing Festival, and asked him where it all
began.
"Well , believe it or not I have been a long time learning my craft, and I actually
did my first paid gig when I was 12 years old. Once I reached my late teens I was gigging
practically every weekend. The past year, though , has really catapulted my career and all
that has happened has been tremendous , and I am really grateful for it.
My success in 'You're a Star' was a defining period in my career, and introduced me to an
audience who, fortunately, have stayed with me. The Country and Irish music scene is very
strong here in Ireland and, thankfully , that's where my core audience is."
Are you happy in that niche?
"Oh yes I am. At the same time there is another side to me which loves Gospel, and
one of my proudest moments was performing at Knock shrine before 5 or 6 thousand people.
Signing a management deal with the Billy Morrissey management has been hugely productive
for me, and has given my career an ultimate sense of direction. It's great to be with
people that you work well with as a team.
My future now lies in the music business , and together with my management team and the
full support of my wife , Christina, and my family, it is full steam ahead from now
on."
How do you see the business developing here in Ireland?
" There's an awful lot of talent , good talent, here in Ireland, but it needs support
from the media to develop it. In that respect the emergence of the 'Stepping Out'
supplement has given the whole industry a great boost, not only here in Ireland , but
outside it as well, and we should not forget that a lot of our Irish artists are very
successful outside of Ireland. The music business is an international market now, and we
need to get the message out that we have tremendous talent in this country.
We have had a lot of success internationally, but to me the Clancy Brothers were the
forerunners of the whole movement. A lot of other artists have followed in their
footsteps, but to me the Clancys will remain the pioneers.
My focus is to meet as many people as I possibly can. If they get to hear what I do,
hopefully they will enjoy it and come back for more. Most of my work at the moment is in
Ireland , but I have done the odd tour of Britain, and there are plans to do more. I am
also going to the States in July for an Irish festival, and while I am there I will be
doing some other work as well.
My priority is to put on a good show wherever I am performing, and to make people feel
special... because they are special. Spending that bit of time after the show with my fans
is very important and helps to make each occasion that bit more memorable."
Do you prefer concerts or dances?
"Well, I have performed in a lot of concerts and cabaret venues, but from the
feedback I get, the majority of people in Ireland still prefer the dancing, and that is
where I do most of my work. After consultation with my manager we decided that this was
the way to go, and I am delighted at the way things have turned out.
The Irish music industry is in a very healthy state at the moment. Each weekend you have
hundreds of people attending dances all over Ireland, and long may it continue."
You have achieved a lot of success over the last year. Where would you like to see
yourself at the end of another year?
"At the end of another year I hope to have built further on what I have achieved. To
date I have another single coming on the market , and my first album 'King of the Road'
continues to sell well. The home scene is really successful , and the American and British
scenes hold a lot of promise. So all in all I am very optimistic for the future.
There is also the possibility of a second album on the way, and we are looking at some new
material for this. I have written some songs in the past and hopefully I will have some
new ones penned for inclusion in the future album.
But my main focus will be on stage shows . I am determined to put on as good and
entertaining a show as I possibly can for my fans. If at the end of an evening show people
can come to me and say 'Thanks James, we have had a fantastic evening' then I know I have
done a good job, and that's what it's all about.
Regards,
Roger Ryan
