Rhonda Vincent - In Demand and Full Speed Ahead For Immediate Release May 17, 2005 Nashville, TN - CNN's host of Show Biz Tonight, Mark Dagostino, recently called Rhonda Vincent's new Rounder Records CD/DVD, Ragin' Live "phenomenal" and recommended the project "for those looking to expand their tastes in music." Evidently, people are listening to what's said on CNN. Vincent hasn't had a moment to herself since the airing of the host's on air endorsement, and doesn't mind a bit. "We've just about worn out our tour bus," laughed Vincent. "But it looks like we'll be getting a new one some time in July, so that sure isn't going to slow us down." Vincent's new CD/DVD for Rounder Records, Ragin' Live is currently the #2 Bluegrass project in the nation; and the demand for Vincent for live performances is at an all time high. She makes an appearance on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry stage on May 17th. She'll also stop by the GAC TV studios to appear on the network's top rated video request show, CLR, hosted by Suzanne Alexander which will air on May 23rd. Over the next two weeks, Vincent has performances in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina. Vincent recently performed on The Belle of Louisville, a steamboat participating in the annual Steamboat Derby during the Kentucky Derby festivities. Country and Irish Music Dancing Festival Billy Morrissey has every reason to feel happy with his first Country and Irish Music Festival, which took place last week at the Regina Gran Hotel, Salou, Spain. I went along to the festival but I have to admit that I wasn’t able to keep up with the entire event. There was such a huge variety of events laid on for the week that only the fit and healthy could survive it all. Each day kicked off with poolside entertainment until 5 in the evening. This was followed by three and sometimes four acts in the ballroom. This usually ended at 1.30a.m. and for those who still had some energy to spare, there was a session in the cellar bar until 3.30 a.m. And if you still felt like more, you could join a session in the foyer after that. It really was a case of ‘Bop ‘til you drop’. One person was heard to remark during the week, “ we really are spoiled for choice here this week with all the artists we have performing for us “. The list of artists read like a who’s who of the Irish Music business and consisted of Louise Morrissey, Paddy O’Brien, James Kilbane, John Hogan, Trudi Lalor, Tommy’s Country Roadshow, Denis Allen, Tom Healy, Denis Carey and Nicky Healy. On Thursday afternoon we had a Talent Competition by the pool. Denis Carey and Denis Allen provided some excellent backing for all the contestants, as well as performing some numbers on their own. All the contestants entered into the spirit of the contest and the huge crowd present gave them great encouragement. Dermot Moriarty of Radio Kerry, Mary Ryan of Tipp Midwest Radio and yours truly acted as judges for the contest. Like all good events and occasions, the end ultimately arrived and on Thursday night in the main ballroom the entire cast assembled on stage to perform some closing numbers. On Friday we left for home to go our separate ways but we made many friends during that wonderful week and the memories will linger with us for many a long day. Jimmy Buckley Born in Doon, Co. Limerick, but now living in Co. Galway, Jimmy Buckley is without doubt one of the biggest attractions on the Irish Country Music Scene. I have witnessed at first hand the type of crowds he is now drawing to all venues throughout Ireland and his popularity is not confined to these shores. He is equally as popular in England where he tours regularly and later this year he will be returning to Cadez, Spain, for a series of shows from September 13th to 20th. When I rang Jimmy last week he was on his way to the Shelbourne Park Greyhound Track in Dublin. When I asked him if he was playing a gig there he laughed heartily and said “no indeed Roger, I’m racing a greyhound there.” The dog is called Jumeriah Nikita and Jimmy told me he is very keen on greyhounds, although he did admit that he stops short of walking the dogs in the morning. How did you get started in this business, I asked him? “I entered a talent show on the ‘Gerry Ryan’s Secrets’ T.V. show, and won it singing a Randy Travis song called ‘Forever and Ever Amen’. That was about 11 years ago I think and following that I put a band together and took to the road. The first couple of years weren’t all that rosey, but then Henry Mc Mahon came along with a song called ‘Your Wedding Day’, and this was the one that really jump-started my career. Henry has been a big influence on my career, and not only acts as my manager but he has also written other songs for me as well as other Irish artists.” How many nights a week are you out? “On average we do five nights a week, and thankfully so far we are doing tremendous business all over Ireland. Northern Ireland is particularly good to us and the dancing scene up there is in a very healthy state at the minute. As a matter of fact the scene generally is very good throughout the country and long may it continue.” What’s happening on the recording front? “Well I have a new single on the market right now called ‘Monivea Angle’, which is an original song written by my guitar player Eugene Cunningham. This will be included in my new album, which should be on the market sometime in June. Other tracks already recorded are ‘The Swallow’, ‘Kellyanne’ (an original by Henry Mc Mahon), ‘Blue Ridge Mountain Girl’ and the Gene Watson hit, ‘Down To Nothing’. I have been featuring all of the songs on my stage shows and they have gone down well. If the dancers like the songs then you can be pretty sure that the album will go down well.” Do you vary your show in England? “Well the English market is a little different from here in that we tend to play a lot of concerts in theatres there. For that type of audience I do a type of cabaret act and include quite a lot of impressions of some of my favourite artists and that goes down well, especially when I do Daniel O’Donnell, who is a great favourite in England.” Who are your favourite artists? “Well Merle Haggard would be my all time favourite as well as Lefty Frizzell and Gene Watson. I have lots of favourites really and try to listen to as many of them as I can, particularly when I’m driving to and from our gigs.” Can you list some career highlights? “The first one that springs to mind is the recent show at the Helix in Dublin. This was a breakthrough for Irish Country Music and hopefully will be repeated at a future date. Others I can recall are playing support to the great Glen Campbell, and playing at a Man Utd. Dinner on a St. Patrick’s Night in Manchester, and meeting all the players and the legendary Matt Busby.” Apart from the dogs, what other sports do you follow? “Well I still consider myself a Limerick man and I like to follow the Limerick hurlers. We haven’t had a great deal of success in recent years but I feel our day will come.” Any ambitions? “One thing I would like to do is record a comedy routine with Ireland’s funny man Conal Gallan. That would really be something, and I just know it would be lots of fun just doing it. Apart from that I am very happy with the way my career has turned out, and I just hope the business keeps going as it is. There are quite a lot of people involved in the business here in Ireland now, and it’s great that they can all make a decent living out of it. Long may it continue.” As we approach the summer months Jimmy has a packed diary of dates all over Ireland. He has just returned from England where he performed to packed theatres and dancehalls, and his fans across the water can’t wait for his return in July. In September Jimmy will be going to Spain with Paul Claffey of Mid-Western Radio to perform for 7 nights, joining Jimmy will be Paddy Cole, Frank McCaffery and Ireland’s funny man Conal Gallan, a great line up for some fun in the sun.
