George Jones to
Receive 2008
Kennedy Center
Honors
(Nashville, TN)
Country music
icon George
Jones has been
chosen to
receive the 2008
Kennedy Center
Honors. Jones,
who has been
called, the
"greatest living
country singer,"
earned his
reputation by
diving so deeply
into a song's
lyrics that
listeners
couldn't help
but feel an
emotional
connection to
the song and the
singer. The
country legend
first hit the
charts in 1955
and since then
has won two
Grammys,
numerous CMA and
ACM Awards, has
been inducted
into the Country
Music Hall of
Fame, and still
headlines nearly
100 shows a
year.
"I am completely
overwhelmed to
be the recipient
of the Kennedy
Center Honors,"
said Jones. "I
can't believe
that I have been
included in the
same company as
previous winners
that are country
music legends:
Dolly Parton,
Johnny Cash,
Loretta Lynn,
Roy Acuff and
Willie Nelson.
Since I was a
young man, I
have just done
what I love and
that is sing
country music,
and I never
dreamed that
something this
special would
happen to me. I
am completely
humbled and will
be proud to
accept the
award!"
Since 1978, the
Kennedy Center
Honors have
redefined
America's
perception of
its artistic
legacy and
reinvented the
way this nation
rewards artists.
The Honors have
been compared to
a knighthood in
Britain, or the
French Legion of
Honor. At the
same time, the
annual addition
of Honors
recipients
charts the
international
standard of
excellence set
by America's
artists, as well
as the aesthetic
inspiration
provided by
artists of other
nations who have
achieved
prominence on
these shores.
The Honors gala
is the Kennedy
Center's most
important annual
fundraising
event,
supporting its
performing arts,
education, and
outreach
programs. In
addition to the
gala performance
in the Center
Opera House, the
Honorees are
treated to a
White House
reception and
banquet.

COUNTRY MUSIC'S LACEY D WINS
COLGATE COUNTRY SHOWDOWN STATE FINAL
Nashville, Tennessee (September 9, 2008) – Lacey D of
Arlington, Washington took the state title and $1,000 at
the 27th Annual Colgate Country Showdown Oregon State Final. The
Mill Casino Hotel in North Bend showcased ten acts who had
won a local contest sponsored by radio stations throughout Oregon and
Washington, enabling each to perform at the state level competition of
America’s largest country music talent search.
Representing radio station KAPS of Mt. Vernon, Washington,
Lacey D, prevailed at Friday’s state level event. Like most singers,
Lacey D started singing in school and church choirs. Throughout junior
and senior high school she studied voice and trained at a performing
arts school in Kirkland, Washington. There she was involved in musical
theater, cabaret shows and participated in master classes as well as
entertaining at numerous private parties, charity auctions, sporting
events, for a Cystic Fibrosis event in Seattle and Western Washington
area fairs and festivals. At age 14 she recorded her rendition of the
National Anthem. During that process a friend introduced her to a
songwriter/producer in Seattle. That meeting led to a 10-year friendship
and hundreds of hours in the recording studio. It was through that
relationship that a Nashville producer heard her. In early 2007 he
expressed an interest in producing an album. Lacey D has seen many doors
opened with her in-studio work and recently recorded her first album at
the Bayou Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. She was recognized by CMA
Close-Up magazine as an “Artist to Watch in 2008”. An excited Lacey D
says, “I'm not sure yet where this path will lead, but with the love
and support of my family and friends, my dreams are endless and I'm
ready for the ride!” For more on Lacey D, visit http://www.laceyd.com/.
She won Friday’s competition, with two original pieces, Missin’ Your
Love Tonight and Jet Plane. Other acts – listed with their
sponsoring radio station – were The Boyle Brothers (Jacob, Jared, Jesse
& Jeffrey Boyle) KLYK/KEDO Longview, WA; Nicole Lewis KLAD
Klamath Falls, OR; Billy Lund KRWQ Medford, OR; Scott Perry
KPOD Crescent City, CA; Suzanne Randle KSHR Coos Bay, OR;
Samantha Rogers KSHL Newport, OR; Tristan Nichols KRKT Albany,
OR and August Night (Dennis Harris & Grace Harris) KBAM Longview,
OR.
On October 18th Lacey D will compete in the West Regional at The
Mill Casino Hotel in North Bend, Oregon to determine if she will advance
to the National Final. The five regional winners – from across the
country – will receive an all expense-paid trip to the National Final
to compete for $100,000 and the coveted national title of Best
New Act in Country Music. The National Final will air nationwide,
over syndicated television in March and April.
About the Showdown: Each spring, more than 50,000 artists
compete in the Colgate-sponsored local competitions with 450 radio
stations throughout the U.S. and over $300,000 in cash prizes are
awarded throughout 500+ live competitions. Local winners then compete at
the 48 state and five regional competitions throughout the summer and
fall. The Colgate Country Showdown culminates with a national television
final competition as the regional winners vie for $100,000 and the title
of Best New Act in Country Music. The televised one-hour special has
been hosted in the past by country music superstars such as Barbara
Mandrell, Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, etc. The competition boasts a
"who's who" in the Country Music industry with past local and regional
winners including Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Martina
McBride, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sara Evans and Miranda Lambert. For more
information, visit http://www.colgatecountryshowdown.com.
