Montgomery Gentry, Phil Vassar & Rodney Adkins
Join the Country Music Icon for the 12th Annual Event!

(Nashville, TN)--Charlie Daniels and friends Montgomery Gentry, Phil Vassar, Heidi Newfield and Rodney Atkins will offer their time and talents to perform at the 12th Annual Christmas For Kids Benefit Concert Monday, November 24th at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, beginning at 7:00 PM. The charity event raises money for the Christmas For Kids organization. Tickets to the event are available by visiting http://www.christmas4kids.org and more incredible names will be added to the special evening’s lineup as the event approaches.
The Christmas For Kids Organization has been in existence for over twenty years providing special children the opportunity to celebrate the holiday season. Each year, the organization brings the spirit of Christmas to hundreds of children throughout Middle Tennessee allowing them to participate in festive activities organized specifically for them. Events such as the Tour Bus Tour raise money and allow folks to visit the home-away-from-homes of more than fifty stars and celebrities at the Hendersonville Wal*Mart from 5:00 – 9:00PM. The date for the Tour Bus Tour is set for December 15th.
The money raised at both events, the concert and Tour Bus Tour, is used to escort children from 25 different schools for a day-long excursion. The day consists of a chauffeured trip from their school aboard a country music star’s luxury tour bus to a local Wal-Mart where they are accompanied by a volunteer to participate in their own Christmas shopping spree. On the return trip home, the children will participate in a Christmas carol sing-along.
All proceeds from the Tour Bus Show and the Charlie Daniels Band & Friends Benefit Concert (sponsored in part by 95.5 The Wolf)—November 24th--will be donated toward the children’s Christmas Shopping.

Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan

CYCLIC DEFROST MAGAZINE. An electronic music magazine.
REVIEW.
"NASHVILLE SPUTNIK:
The Deep South Outer Space
Productions of Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan"
I’m a sucker for the slightly
more obscure fringes of popular music
history. Nuggets boxsets of 60s
garage - check. Sun Studios box sets of
rockabilly - check. Luke Vibert’s
Nuggets collection of 70s electronica -
check. As Good As It Gets
Hillbilly box sets - check. So just the look of
this collection intrigued me from
the outset, before I even had a clue what
it might sound like. As the back
cover states -
“It’s kind-a-country, kind-a-pop, kind-a-weird…”
Back Story - There’s this
producer who grew up in New York in the
1940s and 50s named Jack
Blanchard. He cuts his first doo-wop 45 in
the late 50s, produces some other
people, then heads to Florida to
make country and western. Yep,
Florida. Florida not being a hive of
C&W action, things aren’t quite
so straight up. He meets his soul mate,
Misty Morgan, a singer and
keyboardist extraordinaire. A few regional
hits later, he’s got enough of a
name to head for Mecca, well, Nashville,
and make a career of independent
productions. So that’s where this
material comes from, the duo’s
productions of both themselves and others.
But what’s it like?
Imagine MOR country pop of the
sort that might not even sound out of place on 2CH.
But, then, something’s not quite right.
You start paying closer attention and everything has a
slightly strange twist.
Perhaps it’s the sitar lines contrasting Brad Wolfe’s huge
drawl in ‘Changin' Times’.
Perhaps it’s the lyrics about the lonely sniper in Rusty
Diamond and Maryanne Mail’s
(pseudonyms for Blanchard and
Morgan) ‘The Lonely Sentry’. Perhaps
it’s lines like ‘If I had a time
machine/I’d fill the tank with gasoline/then I’d
crank it up and set the dial for
yesterday” to replay moments of lost love
in Joel Mathis’ ‘Time Machine’
(which also features some lush synth from
Morgan). Perhaps it’s Morgan’s
own ‘yucka-yucka’ solo in ‘The Love
Habit’ - an Arp synth hooked up
to a proto-talk box for some pre-vocoder action.
Or Misty playing the organ like she’s fingerpicking a banjo
in ‘Cadillac’.
Yet framing all this is jaunty country-pop.
Yep, it’s all just slightly odd, and slightly wonderful.
Highlights other than those
already mentioned definitely come from the
duo’s own recordings, where they
often bring a kind of deadpan Frank
and Nancy Sinatra feel to their
low pitched harmonies - see ‘Lonely Bell’,
‘Journey’s End’ or ‘Hit Me One
More Time’ (outdoing Brittany in the
political incorrectness stakes a
good 30 years earlier). Or the
instrumental ‘Gemini’, a very
obvious ‘tribute’ to the first ever British song
to reach the top of the US charts
- ‘Telstar’ by the Tornados.
This is killer stuff.
There’s enough melodic brilliance to lift it above just
kitsch value.
The music reveals layers of invention the more you listen,
especially in Morgan’s
exploration of keyboard and early synth sounds.
And much of the lyrical content
is just hilarious. The CD liner notes are
extensive, outlining entertaining
histories of criminals and studio execs,
plus a track by track run through
by Blanchard himself. This is a lovingly
put together collection, none of
which has ever been on CD before.
David Thrussell and his Omni
Recording Corporation
have outdone themselves with this compilation.
Adrian Elmer

A HOSPITAL MYSTERY.
I'm home from the
hospital...at least for now,
thanks to some cool little pain pills.
I'm sitting at my computer, trying to keep my legs moving to prevent
blood clots.
This goes against my very nature.
It's been my lifelong practice to never move a muscle
without first thinking it over carefully.
I have no involuntary movements except maybe breathing.
Anyway, here's a weird little
episode from a couple of days ago at the hospital:
I was told not to eat or drink
anything for twelve hours before checking in.
After checking in there was a six hour delay before my surgery,
and then more hours of no eating or drinking during surgery and after it
was over.
I woke up starving and thirsty,
but there was a sign on my room door that said "NPO".
NPO is an abbreviation of the Latin "Non per os" or "Nothing by mouth".
This is like the Catholics calling the Bingo numbers in Latin
so the Protestants can't win.
I had a new nurse who was
friendly enough,
but not the type who would sneak you stuff.
She said I would probably get food and drink soon,
but not to have anything until she found out for sure..
A few minutes later a tray of
beautiful food was wheeled in and presented to me.
I thought that maybe the nurse had worked it out for me,
but I also thought that it might be a mistake.
I put that out of my mind and began eating.
Just then the nurse walked in
and said "Who gave you that food?"
Between gulps I said "Didn't you order it?"
She raised her voice and said" And I gave you specific orders not to
eat..."
I started eating faster.
She was getting louder when I
noticed a huge cherry cobbler on the far side of the tray,
and went for it.
She yelled and I ate at full speed ahead.
She threw up her hands and stormed out of the room.
Speaking of "threw up",
later that night I barfed up something that appeared to be
extra-terrestrial,
and the whole hospital went into red alert.
They rushed samples of my output to the lab,
and somebody thought I was poisoned.
Someone else mentioned carbolic acid, and others suspected internal
bleeding.
I had a crowd around my bed
and staff members running in and out of the room.
Then the news came back from the laboratory:
"No sign of poison, blood or anything harmful."
I guess the lab technicians
weren't looking for cherry cobbler.
