Merle Haggard - "Working Man's
Journey"
For
years Cracker Barrel has fed our appetites with great country cookin'. It seems only
fitting that they continue to find ways to feed our hunger in the form of great country
music. Like most fans, I'm always hungry for more and thanks to Cracker Barrel, our needs
are being met with yet another great country album... this time starring Merle Haggard.
As
you may have guessed from the header, the album is called, "Working Man's
Journey" which includes six songs never before released plus six new recordings of
his classics.

"The
Hag" always has been and always will be the voice for we common folk who have spent
our lives eking out a living as well as a favorite of anyone who is a true country fan.
I'm especially pleased that Cracker Barrel saw fit to put this album together with Merle.
Too few of our living legends are paid this kind of tribute... making them realize that
their contributions to country music not only mattered "back when" but are still
relevant, loved and needed just as much today... and I challenge anyone to tell me that
they don't love Merle's music or don't have a favorite song. Better yet, Merle is still
making new music which is just as strong and as well sung as the hits he had 40 years
ago... six of which are included in this compilation of Merle Haggard.. yesterday and
today.
How important is Merle to our country roots? In his 40 year career he's had 40 #1 hit
songs, won 3 Grammy Awards, received a total of 15 awards from the CMA and the ACM,
including multiple Top Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year Awards. It is my hope
that this album will produce even more awards and accolades for Merle that he so richly
deserves.
If I have any disappointments at all from this CD it's that "Silver Wings"
wasn't included as one of his past hits.. that's my all-time favorite Haggard song. I take
comfort in the fact that he most likely left it off to allow Josh Turner to include it on
his Cracker Barrel album so rather than think that Merle was remiss in singing it just for
me, I must thank him for his generosity in allowing me to hear Josh's version.
Merle remains true to his roots and as such he is the voice of experience as well as the
voice we all love to hear singing our favorite songs.. songs from the heart of the man who
remains the consummate poet of the common folk.

What can be said about Merle Haggard that hasn't already been said? He will always be
known as one of the greatest. His voice is distinct and his music arrangement is always
perfection. He has been one of my favorites for years.
This album has songs that were hits on his early albums. The new ones are true
"Haggard". So, Merle, the good times aren't really over as long as you keep
writing and singing.
I love the album and I think all of you Haggard fans will, too. Visit Cracker Barrel and pick up Merle's latest!
