Call of the West, an acoustic trio who plays music of
the American West, is comprised of David Morris (top) Jeanne Cahill (left) and Jerome
Campbell (right).
Although undeniably influenced by singing cowboys of a
previous era, their music has an original sound. Smooth, rich harmonies are their
hallmark, punctuated by an instrumental foundation influenced in bluegrass, western swing,
acoustic jazz and folk. The groups' sound, far removed from modern country, showcases
progressive original material, classic songs from old westerns, and rarely heard treasures
from cowboy bands of yesteryear.
They have been together for eight years, performing in Northeast Oklahoma at the Allen
Ranch, Gilcrease Museum, northeast Oklahoma historical and cultural celebrations, Dry
Gulch U.S.A., Tulsa State Fair, Tulsa Bluegrass & Chili Festival, the National Cowboy
Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Texas State Fair in Dallas, and the National Cowboy
Symposium in Lubbock, Texas.
They were the feature performers on the 1993 television series, "Allen Ranch Cowboy
Jamboree", which aired weekly on northeast Oklahoma television. They were also
featured on new production of the "Allen Ranch Cowboy Jamboree", a statewide
special on Oklahoma's Public Television, OETA, in the fall of 1996. They have been
selected to be on the roster for the Oklahoma Arts Council touring program for 1999-2001.
Jeanne Cahill plays mandolin, guitar, bass, concertina,
accordion and dobro
in the band. She wrote the band's theme song "Call of the West", from which
the group takes its name, as well as several of the trio's other numbers.
Jerome Campbell plays guitar, banjo and bass, and
has deep bluegrass roots.
While growing up in far northeast Oklahoma, he listened to musicians, such as
Byron Berline and Buck White, who would come to the Campbell house to play
music with his father, the late bluegrass guitarist Royce Campbell.
David Morris plays guitar and bass in the band. David's
versatility as a writer is one
of his greatest attributes. "Custom composing", as he calls it, is where he
thrives,
be it composing for the style of a performer or a personalized wedding song.
Together these three artists create a sound that will take you back to another time and
place along an easy trail of sheer entertainment... even if you're too young to remember
the "old days".
